It was a tough week for some of Beckett’s top teams, but there's still plenty to smile about.

BUCS round up week five

Match of the Week – Women’s Hockey

Leeds Beckett 1st Team 0 - 5 University of Nottingham 1st Team

It was a tough day at the office for Leeds Beckett’s women’s Hockey team as they endured a tough 5-0 defeat at the hands of Nottingham.

The home team faced a dominant Nottingham side that came into the contest on the back of an impressive 3-1 win over University of Edinburgh and continued their form into their match with Beckett.

Despite an amazing defensive effort, including some stunning saves by Beckett, they were not enough to repel the clinical Nottingham attack, as Nottingham went 3-0 up at half time.

An improved second half performance from Beckett saw them nearly score their first goal of the campaign, a well worked move from deep ended by a brilliant shot that went agonisingly wide.

Nottingham scored twice late on to claim a 5-0 victory that certainly didn’t reflect the efforts of the home team.

Beckett’s big winners – Women’s Rugby Union 70-10 Manchester

Beckett’s big winners for week five saw Beckett’s Women’s Rugby Union team rack up an impressive 79-10 victory over the Manchester Metropolitan University.

Beckett faced Manchester opposition for the second consecutive game, after enduring a narrow 27-19 defeat against University of Manchester and exacted their revenge in emphatic fashion.

Beckett’s 13-try haul highlighted the home team’s clinical attack but Beckett were just as ruthless in defence conceding just two tries in the match.

Great result for Beckett WRUFC and good look for your next fixture against our big city rivals University of Leeds next week!

Beckett RUFC suffer 24-18 home defeat to Cardiff Met

Leeds Beckett RUFC’s 1st team suffered an agonising 24-18 defeat to rivals Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Beckett went into the clash full of confidence, hoping to upset 2nd place Cardiff but the Welshmen proved too strong for the home side.

The Bears started off strongly, with dominant possession and territory in the early stages but were denied numerous chances from good scrambling defence by the visitors.

Beckett took the lead through a Connor Lloyd penalty but a brilliant inside ball from Cardiff unlocked the exceptional Beckett defence to give the visitors a 7-3 advantage.

After a nip-and-tuck first half, Beckett found themselves in the ascendency once again, in-form Winger Daniel Leake finishing off a sensational team effort in the corner, giving Beckett an 8-7 lead at the break.

Beckett’s half time advantage was short-lived, as Cardiff scored another scintillating try to reclaim the lead, 14-8, before Beckett conceded another shortly after to go down 21-8.

Despite the 13-point deficit, Beckett continued to fight hard and worked their way back into the contest, James Elliott finding his way over the try line to make it 21-13.

A late penalty to Cardiff all but sealed victory for the visitors but Beckett had the final say in the game as Captain Trystan Lloyd rampaged over to bring the scores to 24-18.

Agonising defeat for Beckett WFC

Last week’s Match of the Week stars Leeds Beckett WFC suffered a 5-1 defeat to table toppers Durham University.

WFC went into the contest searching for their first win of the season, after an impressive draw last time out against the University of Loughborough, but despite a determined performance from the home side Durham were dominant on the day.

Durham’s 5-1 victory sees them extend their lead at the top of the table, whilst Beckett sit 5th in search for their first win of the season.
