Beckett Tennis return to BUCS action

-

After last year’s successful campaign, Leeds Beckett’s Tennis Club have set their goals high for the new season

Last season saw the club win seven league titles and two cup championships resulting in 366 BUCS points – the most scored by a sports club from Leeds Beckett last year.

Head coach Steven McLoughlin admits that 2018-19 will be ‘challenging for different reasons’ but believes his players are capable to perform above and beyond the call of duty this season.

Last week’s results

Beckett’s men’s and women’s first teams pushed the University of Stirling incredibly hard but fell to a narrow 8-4 defeat in a really valiant effort against last year’s national champions and runners-up.

This set up a great day for Beckett men’s tennis. The men’s second team won 12-0 against Strathclyde’s first team, whilst the men’s third team won 10-2 against Liverpool John Moores first team.

Elsewhere, the men’s fourth team faced off against Beckett’s fifth team for the battle of Beckett bragging rights, with the fourth taking out a 10-2 victory - however, the men’s fifth team didn’t make it easy for their fellow Team Beckett players, with many matches going to 3rd sets!

Men’s sixth and seven teams managed to defeat Leeds University’s second and third teams 10-2 and 8-4, respectively.

Beckett Women’s put up a good fight in all four matches but just came short in some. However, there are positives to take from all.

The women’s second team defeated Liverpool University’ first team 10-2, the women’s third team were edged out 8-4 against Manchester Metropolitan University and the women’s fourth were defeated 12-0 by Keele.

With many of the Women playing their first BUCS matches, in high leagues against other universities 1st teams, it will be tough. But Coach Steve is certain they will be more than capable of getting the right results as the season progresses.
