BUCS Cup round-up
21 February 2019
It was a big week for many of Leeds Beckett’s sports clubs, with our women’s football team featuring as our official 'Match of the Week'.
The university’s first team booked their place into the quarter finals of the BUCS Championship Cup with a 4-2 victory over the University of Chichester.
Beckett dominated throughout the fiery affair but were held to 0-0 by a dogged Chichester side in the first half, despite the onslaught in attack from the home side.
Leeds Beckett broke the deadlock after they were awarded a penalty in the 47th minute, with Ellie White taking advantage of the spot kick to put Beckett 1-0 up.
Ellie wasted little time in doubling the hosts’ lead, bagging her brace with a quality strike to make it 2-0, with Hannah Smith grabbing Beckett’s third goal shortly after, which left Chichester stunned.
Molly Harvard continued the home side’s rout with another quality finish to give Beckett an unassailable 4-0 lead in the 75th minute.
The game looked to be clear sailing for Leeds Beckett in the dying stages, but as tempers flared Chichester found a way back into the game with two late goals before the referee dismissed a Beckett player after the game reached its boiling point.
Leeds Beckett captain Emily Cattle was happy with her team’s performance.
“We played really well,” she said
“We went into the game not knowing what to expect from Chichester and we struggled in the first half but got back into it in the second and it was a great win for us.”
Beckett’s victory sees them advance to the quarter finals of the Cup, where they will travel to the University of Hertfordshire on Wednesday 27 February.
