Leadership Programmes

As leaders, it is essential to remain open to new ways of thinking, explore new experiences and acquire new skills. Our Leadership Programmes provide a safe and challenging environment in which to do this. Learn alongside your peers with our expert speakers and facilitators. Build new relationships across the university and benefit from sessions that are tailored to address the specific challenges you face.

Below are details of the Leadership Programmes that have been running in 2019/20.

Leading Professional Services

This programme is designed for current leaders aspiring to the most senior leadership roles and offers delegates an opportunity to review and enhance their leadership skills whilst building strong cross-university networks. The current Leading Professional Services programme started in January 2020 and is a series of 5 sessions across 6 months, including a 3-day Leadership Retreat. 

Aimed at: Services colleagues with the potential and ambition for senior leadership roles. (Grades 7-9)

Development Stories - Joe Rossiter - Associate Director Leadership Programme

This highly successful programme has enabled delegates to explore and develop their approach to leadership within the context of their service areas and the wider environment.

Future Leaders Programme

This series of sessions is aimed at colleagues with both the potential and aspiration to take their first step into a management role. The programme consists of 4 half-day sessions per cohort, focused on developing leadership knowledge and skills, including exploring Understanding Leadership, Understanding Me (profiling), Leadership in Action and Coaching and Action Planning. The current programme started in January 2020.

Aimed at:  Talented colleagues with an interest in a future role in management/leadership. (Grades 3-5)

The development scheme has proved popular with colleagues who have taken part so far. Here's what a participant from the 2017/18 cohort had to say about the programme -  

“I found being part of the Future Leaders Programme a valuable experience. The Programme helped me to gain a wider understanding of leadership and equipped me with the skills and knowledge to effectively manage others. It was particularly useful learning effective techniques to instruct others and gaining an understanding of different personality traits and how this affects the way people like to be managed. Even though it’s a while since I completed the programme I still draw upon the materials now to support me in my role.”

Women Leaders 

Aurora is Advance HE`s leadership development initiative for women and those who identify as a woman. It is run as a unique partnership bringing together leadership experts and higher education institutions to take positive action to address the under-representation of women in leadership positions in the sector.

Aimed at: Women with the potential and ambition for future leadership. (Grades 6-8) 

Programme overview

Past delegates of the Aurora programmes are invited to alumni events and are contacted directly with further information.

Women in Leadership Regional Action Learning Sets - joining colleagues from Leeds Beckett, Huddersfield, Leeds, Leeds Trinity, Bradford, Northumbria, Sheffield Hallam and York St John, the aim of the sets is to provide up to four female academic colleagues from each Institution with a space to focus on career enhancement and to provide networking opportunities across the HE sector.

Aimed at:  Women who are interested in progressing their careers and building cross-institutional networks. (Grade 7)

Past participants on the Action Learning Set programme have said -

"I loved it and found it very interesting and useful. The networking opportunities and discussing important issues with colleagues who have a bit of context from working in HE but can be absolutely objective."

"The sessions enabled me to have some time out to think through challenges and meet some amazing people who helped me work these challenges through proactively and thoughtfully."

Academic Leadership

Network events and tailored development sessions provide opportunities for knowledge exchange and peer support. Regular sessions are available for all Heads of Subject, Course Directors, Professors and Directors of Research. These events are created and delivered in close partnership with CLT and Service areas and are promoted directly to colleagues in those roles.

Development Stories - Melissa Askew - Fierce Conversations

Regular network events provide academic leaders with opportunities to share their ideas, concerns and many examples of best practice.

Leadership Masterclasses

Alumni of our many Leadership Development Programmes over the years have benefitted from networking with their peers in the learning environment of our specialist Masterclasses. This year we will also be running a series of Leadership Stories where some of our own senior leaders will share their moments of key learning, advice and know-how with colleagues.

Leadership skills and behaviours continually evolve and grow with experience.
