Centre for Research in Computer Science and Applications

Green Networking and Cloud Computing (GENial)

Our Sustainable IT research is closely aligned to UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals: data center energy efficiency (UN 2030 SDG 13); quality education for Green IT (UN 2030 SDG 4)

Green Networking and Cloud Computing (GENial)

The challenge

The Sustainable IT research group (part of the Center for Research in Computer Science and Applications, CriSCA, at Leeds Beckett University) actively engages in Green IT research and projects to address the global-wide climate change challenge. High-quality research is facilitated through forged strong international academic as well as industrial collaboration.

You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.

Jane Goodall

The Approach

The Sustainable IT research group aims to contribute to relevant UN Sustainable Development Goals. This is made possible through: collaborative applied research in real context with target beneficiaries; provision of world-class education that inculcates Green IT alongside cutting-edge IT skills.

Research activities have included close collaboration with the following:

  • Academics and Research Agencies
  • Data Centres
  • Industries

World-Class Transnational Education Provision

The Impact

According to Digital Skills Agenda Europe 2025, there is a need for a consolidated effort to strengthen human capital, employability and competitiveness. This is due to a predicted shortfall of 500,000 ICT professionals by 2020. Additionally, the European Commission views the ICT sector’s pivotal role as leading the way on climate and energy targets through a transition to an energy-efficient and low carbon economy.

EMJMD GENIAL (with three full partners and 30 global associate partners), a sequel to PERCCOM, has a vision of cleaner networking and computing technologies that leads to sustainability in ICT. It aims to train future generations of ICT engineers as well as researchers in the design, implementation and deployment of more sustainable ICT applications/services.
