Simeon Barclay
Simeon Barclay (b.1975, Huddersfield) is an artist based in Leeds. His practice draws upon a diverse mix of references culled from fashion magazines, music, sports journalism, maligned cult figures and British popular culture to consider the distinct ways in which we both inhabit and perform subjectivity.
He is invested in the dynamic nature of language, the mediated image and objects to both seduce and provoke. These impulses are understood in relation to the human condition, an existence Barclay perceives as being caught up in the tumultuous, unfixed process of situating and defining ourselves within culture and tradition.
Barclay studied at Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds; Chelsea College of Art & Design and Goldsmiths College, London. Recent exhibitions include Art Now: The Hero Wears Clay Shoes, Tate Britain, London (2017); They Don't Like It Up Em', Cubitt, London (2016); Exit, Rodolphe Janssen, Brussels (2017); Houses are Really Bodies, Cubitt, London (2017); On Longing, Arcadia Missa, New York (2017) Wagstaff's, Mostyn, Llandudno (2017); Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool (2016). He is the recipient of the Liverpool Biennial Associate Artist Award (2016)
