Ama Samaradheera | Stakeholder perspectives on implementing sustainable tourism strategies in Sri Lanka

Supervisors: Dr Simon Woodward and Dr Milka Ivanova

Ama is a full-time PhD student in the Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Management.

My research aim is to investigate the challenges stakeholders face when implementing sustainable practices in the tourism industry in Sri Lanka and to provide solutions for local problems arising from the industry. Tourism is an emerging industry in Sri Lanka, following the devastating effects of the tsunami in 2014, and the end of the civil war in 2009. I intend to develop a framework based on triple bottom line theory and knowledge management theory that will guide implementing a sustainable strategy in tourism. The findings will provide new insights about how sustainable tourism competitiveness could be improved by identifying and integrating critical factors in the tourism Industry. In terms of its practical contribution, the findings of the study will be used to make specific strategic recommendations on how to implement competitive strategies for sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka.
