Jiu Jitsu

A martial art

for everyone

The Jiu Jitsu Club is taught by Sensei Jas Bhachu (4th degree black belt) and Sensei Joe Dalzell (1st degree black belt). Both instructors have been practicing martial arts for over 25 years and are both experienced Jiu Jitsu instructors of The Jiu Jitsu Foundation, the largest Jiu Jitsu organisation in the UK.

Our Ethos

Get involved

Jiu Jitsu is a simple and effective self-defence martial art that anyone can take up without having any previous martial arts experience. We teach a modern form of traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu through defensive techniques that use an attacker’s momentum against them in single or multiple attacker situations.

You will learn core principles such as:

  • Throwing
  • Locking
  • Striking
  • Restraining
  • Falling

Your first session is free. We welcome all new students, just come down in gym clothing and give it a try!

Did you know?

  • Joe is also a Black belt in Judo
  • Jas is the youngest 4th degree black belt in The Jiu Jitsu Foundation
  • There are over 100 clubs across the UK and we also have clubs in Australia, Canada, Cyprus, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Argentina and Japan.

What equipment will I need?

New members will need to purchase a martial arts uniform and belt after their first few sessions if they wish to continue. These are subsidised if purchased through the club.

Everything you need to know

We welcome everyone from complete new beginners to people who have experience in other martial arts.

Sessions are held twice a week on Tuesdays 18:00 – 19:30 and Thursdays 18:00 – 19:30 at our City centre gym.

A typical session consists of a warm up, followed by learning techniques with a partner and then applying what you have learned in a variety of different scenarios and with other club members. As students progress they will also learn to defend themselves against a variety of weapons, which include bottles, batons, knives and swords.

After each session we like to go for a drink to catch up and socialise with everyone. We have socials every two weeks which encompass a variety of activities.

In November and February, the Jiu Jitsu Foundation holds national competitions where you’ll get to compete against other individuals of the same experience as you.

Gradings are held in December, March and June. This is when you will have the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned from the semester and progress to new belts. Our belt structure is – white, yellow, orange, green, purple, light blue, dark blue, brown and black. Students who train regularly and pass all gradings can achieve their green belt within one year. If you continue to gain experience up to a brown belt in our organisation you can then become an instructor and teach on your own.

We have been supporting students to reach their potential through the scheme since 2002. Famous alumni that have benefitted from the scheme include Lucy Bronze, Alistair Brownlee, Alex Yee, Emily Scarratt, Vicky Fleetwood, Laura Weightman and Tom Bosworth.

Leeds Beckett awards a number of sports scholarships to high performing athletes each year who are committed to upholding the values of the university and willing to represent Leeds Beckett in BUCS events. Scholarships are also awarded to those who demonstrate the ability to progress and achieve high levels of success in their chosen sports.

If you are interested in trying out Jiu Jitsu please just come down to our sessions. We will be at freshers fair if you want to chat to us for some more information.
