Once more

With Energy

Cheerleading is a fast growing sport in the UK, and Leeds Beckett boasts two clubs for new students to choose from.

Our ethos

A nationwide reputation

Our Match Team Cheerleaders perform at AU Club fixtures throughout the year, including the annual Varsity event in front of 15,000 spectators. If you’re looking for something with a more competitive edge why not try out for our competition team. We have a nationwide reputation in University Cheerleading for being the team to watch in our division. We have a close partnership with the all-star programme Aviators Cheer (based at Level-Up Academy) who compete at the Cheerleading World Championships in Florida each year.

Everything you need to know

Competition team

We will encourage you to push yourself to achieve the most you can in the sport and allow you to learn, develop and perfect new skills. Alongside the training and competition element of cheerleading, you will be involved in one of the biggest social sports at the university. This means you can be involved in fun socials, tour and making friendships that will last a lifetime. Training takes places twice a week at Level Up Academy, with a full sprung floor, tumbling tracks and pits.

Match team

Leeds Beckett Match Team Cheerleaders perform at AU club fixtures throughout the year including Varsity in front of 15,000 people. They train twice weekly, getting involved in all sorts of other events socially.

Match Team is all about fun, we are a close-knit group with friendship and inclusivity at our core, welcoming anyone and everyone, with no prior experience needed. Semester one will be dedicated to learning our routine and then performances will begin in semester two.

Training

Training takes place:

  • Mondays: 7pm-9pm – Gym 2 (HC)
  • Tuesdays: 6pm-8pm – Gym 2 (HC)
Silver club mark

The Cheerleading Match and Competition teams have both been awarded the Silver Club Mark for 2023/24

We have been supporting students to reach their potential through the scheme since 2002. Famous alumni that have benefitted from the scheme include Lucy Bronze, Alistair Brownlee, Alex Yee, Emily Scarratt, Vicky Fleetwood, Laura Weightman and Tom Bosworth.

Leeds Beckett awards a number of sports scholarships to high performing athletes each year who are committed to upholding the values of the university and willing to represent Leeds Beckett in BUCS events. Scholarships are also awarded to those who demonstrate the ability to progress and achieve high levels of success in their chosen sports.

Equipment

For both teams, successful athletes will need to purchase their own uniform and there will also be an opportunity to purchase an optional training kit.

Pre-requisites
  • Competition Cheerleading:
No previous cheerleading experience is required, however those trialling for places on the competition team will need to perform a short routine which may include tumbling.
  • Match Cheerleading:
No prior cheerleading experience is required, however new members will be lead through a piece of choreography by our coaches at trials, so a basic dance level is beneficial.

Our 'Clean Sport' commitment

All sporting participants have the right to compete in drug-free sport (Clean Sport). Leeds Beckett University adopts the UK Anti-Doping and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) position that cheating, including doping, is fundamentally contrary to the spirit of sport, undermining the otherwise positive impact it can have on society.
