Recently Andrew has undertaken and delivered a range of contract research projects for commercial clients working as an Associate of the Retail Institute. The nature of the projects have ranged from practical design innovation challenges with subsequent analysis and feasibility reporting, through to research into the implications, possibilities and limitations of digital print in the packaging industry.
Andrew has worked at Leeds Beckett for nearly twenty years, teaching and supporting students across a range of art, design and filmmaking courses. Digital tools and workflows in a graphic arts context are central to his teaching and personal practice.
Having studied traditional Fine Art, drawing, painting and printmaking as an undergraduate, Andrew’s Masters study focussed on digital multi-media and interactive experiences. This range of experience in different art and design production processes both digital and analogue has led to teaching across multiple courses. The breadth of skills has relevance in professional contexts where multi-platform projects require complicated combinations of approaches.
Andrew’s interest in learning and teaching has developed through undertaking different roles within the University, including undergraduate course leader, involved in curriculum development, initiating a new course, and reviewing course documentation both internal and external to the university.
Recent work with the Retail Institute has kick started some research work and opened up further possibilities for the application of skills and knowledge to commercial projects particularly in the area of packaging and fast moving consumer goods.
About to embark on a research award, Andrew will interrogate his own working practices and methodologies by exploring visual and interactive responses to behaviour surrounding the use of metric and imperial systems of measurement.
Andrew is currently teaching on the BA (Hons) Graphic Arts and Design course within the School of Art, Architecture & Design. He is coordinating the final year of this course and consequently teaching across all the level 6 modules.
