Dr Dan Weaving

Senior Lecturer

Dan Weaving is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Performance and has over 10 years’ experience working as an applied sport scientist. He is also an adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, Australia.

Dan completed his BSc and PhD at the University of Hull before joining Leeds Beckett University in 2016 as Project Officer. Since then, he has worked as a Research Fellow, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer.

Dan currently supervises several PhD and MRes students who are undertaking research projects within professional sports organisations (Crystal Palace, Leeds United, Rotherham United), national governing bodies (Football Association, Rugby Football League) and wearable technology companies (Prevayl, Playermaker, Catapult, Prevent Biometrics). He has supervised five PhD and five MRes students to completion. His continued work with these organisations enable his research expertise to align with industry questions to inform knowledge exchange.

Current Teaching

  • Applied Physiology of Sports Performance (Module Leader)
  • Applied Data Analytics and Visualisation (Module Leader)
  • PhD, MRes, Major Independent Study and Final Year Project Supervisor

Research Interests

Dan’s main research focus is on the measurement of exercise exposures in the field, particularly the analysis of wearable technology data to critically evaluate the extent that measurements represent different types of exercise. He has contributed several peer-reviewed articles and invited commentaries on the topic and is regularly invited to speak at conferences.

More specifically, this has focused on the creation of new measurement techniques through collaborations with the School of Computing and the use and integration of analysis techniques to assist decision making in applied practice. Given the physiological, biomechanical and psycho-social interactions within exercise measurement, Dan hopes to continue to bring these disciplines together to improve the outcomes of exercise measurement in the field.
