Dan Weaving is a Lecturer in Sports Performance in the Carnegie Applied Rugby Research Centre and Lead Sport Scientist at Leeds Rhinos Rugby League Club.
Dan completed his undergraduate degree and PhD at the University of Hull. His industry funded PhD investigated the validity of measurements used to quantify training and competition loads in professional rugby league players. This was completed whilst working as an applied sport scientist within two professional rugby league clubs.
In 2016, he joined Leeds Beckett University where he has provided applied sports support to Leeds Rhinos Rugby League Club alongside his Research Fellow and Lecturer positions.
His continued work within professional sports organisations has enabled his research to align with industry questions to answer contemporary issues to inform practice. As part of this, Dan supervises a number of industry funded students embedded within professional sports organisations at MRes and PhD level.
His research into higher dimensional analysis and their application to professional sport has gained an international reputation, evidenced by a recent Invited Commentary in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance and invited presentations including French Rugby, Barcelona F.C. and The Rugby Football League.
- MSc Physiology of Sports Conditioning (Module Leader)

Dan's research has a large focus on the application of wearable technology that is utilised by almost all professional team sport organisations to manage the training process to reduce injury risk and improve performance. This includes global positioning systems and wearable mouthguard technology.
In particular, given the complexity of the demands placed onto athletes during training and competition and the large volumes of data that are produced, Dan's research focuses on suitable analysis techniques to handle this complexity including principal component analysis and partial least squares correlation analysis.
Dan has built a number of international collaborations to support this body of work including organisations within Australia's National Rugby League and La Liga Football competitions.
