Dr Ah-Lian Kor is part of Leeds Beckett MSc Sustainable Computing Curriculum Development Team. She has been involved in several EU projects for Green Computing, Innovative Training Model for Social Enterprises Professional Qualifications, and Integrated System for Learning and Education Services. She has published work on ontology, Semantics Web, Web Services, Portal and semantics for GIS. She is active in AI research and has developed an intelligent map understanding system and reasoning system. 

She is an Editorial Board Member of the International Journal of Web Portals; a member of IQN (international quality network for spatial cognition); sits on many international conference program/technical committees (e.g. IEEE Cloud Computing, Cyberlaws Conference, ICT-EurAsia, etc.); an active paper reviewer for journals and conferences (e.g. AMCIS, International Journal of Emergency Services, Inderscience journal, etc.); Editorial Advisory Board Member for International Journal on Advances in Intelligent Systems and  International Journal on Advances in Security; an associate member of the EPSRC funded e-GISE (e-Government and System Evaluation) Network) and has helped organise an international workshop (eGOV’05) for the network.

Research Interests

Applied Research

Dr Kor designed, implemented and evaluated interactive simulations, investigated reasoning and learning styles adopted by users when they interact with computer learning systems. She has modelled qualitative understanding based on semantic networks, causal maps, and also conceptual change based on analysis of search space (General Problem Solver Model). She has used prolog to develop a prototype which uses qualitative spatial reasoning techniques to identify road junctions: T, Y or V, and X in a digitised vector map; developed a knowledge base with reasoning capability for cardinal directions.

Dr Kor conducted statistical tests (e.g. Chi Square, Correlation, ANOVA, etc...) on collected survey data through CHALCS, a community project in Leeds. For the MOSE project, quantitative analyses (e.g. multiple regression, correlation, ANOVA, and t-test) have been conducted on data collected through online questionnaires. She has guided students in the development of expert systems for a local power station and intelligent control as well as monitoring system for a data centre.

Theoretical Research

Dr Kor co-developed the Horizontal and Vertical Constraints Model and an Expressive Hybrid Model for the reasoning of cardinal direction relations between regions. This entailed formalising definitions for the following: atomic binary cardinal relations, whole and part cardinal relations, weak and expressive relations. Dr Kor introduced a formula which could compute the composition of cardinal direction relations for whole or part regions. Composition tables are used as part of the inference engine in the reasoning systems.

Applied information systems development life cycle, knowledge management life cycle, organisational learning, and mapping techniques (e.g. conversation, UML and states, and causal mapping) to develop an integrated framework (CARE: Continuous Adaptable Reflective Evaluation) for evaluating e-government systems (Systems Evaluation Life Cycle, SELC; Reflective Evaluative Methodology, REM; Integrated methodology (SSM, HSM, and Research Methodologies).

Based on the action research cycle and innovation theories, a conceptual action-oriented Innovation Model is built. It aims to be used as a guide for the implementation of an innovation process that could bring about transformation and also for the evaluation of an organisation'’s innovation activeness. A novel PPT (People, Process, Technology) Innovation Value Model is built to guide the evaluation of innovation value in the public sector. Dr Kor developed a calculi for the conversion of information to knowledge (and vice versa), and constructed a novel Information and Knowledge Management System which aims to unify the various epistemologies and contemporary models for knowledge.
