Dr Kan Zhou, Senior Lecturer

Dr Kan Zhou

Senior Lecturer

Dr Kan Zhou is a lecturer with extensive research experience in Civil Engineering. His research interests focus on the fields of composite steel-concrete structures, structural fire engineering and circular economy in civil engineering.

Kan is currently delivering the modules on the topic of structural analysis, engineering and design from Level 5 to 7 in Leeds Beckett University. He is also supervising undergraduate final year projects and master students’ dissertations. He is conducting multi-disciplinary research on circular economy and composite steel-concrete structures. He is the Student Liaison Officer in Leeds Beckett for the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).

Before joining Leeds Beckett University, Kan was a post-doctoral researcher in the University of Bradford. He has contributed to four UK and EU research projects on innovative design/testing of composite steel-concrete structures and the application of circular economy in structural engineering.

Previously, Kan was a PhD candidate in Tsinghua University, collaboratively undertaking industry-linked consultancy activities and project-based structural assessments. He is a co-author of a textbook on structural fire engineering and acted as the coordinator of several Chinese design guides.

Current Teaching

  • Structural Analysis and Structural Analysis Techniques (Level 5)
  • Structural Engineering and Structural Engineering Techniques (Level 6)
  • Independent Project (Level 6)
  • Structural Analysis and Design (Level 7)
  • Civil Engineering Dissertation (Level 7)

Research Interests

His research interests are composite steel-concrete structures, circular economy in civil engineering and structural fire behaviour and design. He has developed an expertise in structural testing and numerical modelling, with a particular strength in the fire behaviour of composite structures and circular economy in structural engineering, through high quality publications in refereed international journals, participating in international collaborative research, giving invited presentations, participating in organising international conferences, and reviewing papers for journals/conferences. He authored/co-authored more than 40 journal/conference papers, one book, and three Chinese patents. He was involved in drafting and revising several Chinese codes and specifications.
