Fiona is a qualified Adult Health Nurse and worked clinically in a range of roles including Critical Care, Community Cardiac Rehab, Research Nursing and Practice Education before moving into the HEI sector. She is involved in a number of external groups and partnerships with clinical and HEI partners in her role as Academic Practice Lead for Pre Registration Nursing.
Prior to qualifying as a Nurse, Fiona worked as a Research Associate at a number of HEIs and in the voluntary sector, with a focus on social exclusion, health inequalities and social policy. This took place in the latter part of the 1990s in South Africa, and in the early 2000s in the UK. These themes and interests have continued post qualifying, and Fiona is particularly interested in public health and health inequalities, the health of marginalised groups, and her research interests reflect this.
Fiona also volunteers with a charity that provides safety information, and support to women who sex work. Additionally, she still works critical care shifts to ensure her acute nursing skills are kept up to date, and she works as a nurse at music festivals, again to keep her skills up to date and continuously develop her knowledge base.
