Head of Subject
Justin Burns is Head of the Subject Area for Art, within the School of Art, Architecture & Design. As the Head of the cognate academic area and an advocate for the disciplines, Justin is responsible for academic leadership and enhancement of the department, working in support of the Dean of School.
Justin is a Senior HEA Fellow, whose pedagogical research interests focus on course design, student engagement, and teaching and learning environments in art & design education. A committee member of the Graphic Design Educators’ Network (GDEN), working for the advancement of education in Graphic Design and represents The School of Art, Architecture & Design at LBU and GDEN at The Council for Higher Education in Art & Design (CHEAD). These activities also draw upon his professional practice experiences in industry as a multi-disciplinary designer working within diverse fields such as cultural arts, healthcare, retail and tourism.
Currently, Justin is External Examiner for the BA (Hons) Graphic Design program at Middlesex University. He was previously Course Leader of the BA (Hons) Graphic Arts & Design at Leeds Beckett University and a Senior Teaching Fellow and Graphic Design Pathway Leader at Winchester School of Art, (University of Southampton).

Justin is a PhD candidate within the School of Art, Architecture & Design exploring the typographic articulation, graphic language and identity within selected seaside resorts in the UK. This research inquiry considers the role of typography and graphic environmental design in current and future regeneration strategies of coastal towns.
The connection between practice, theory and teaching & learning strategic development is fundamental to his research. His recent work has explored the identity of urban and rural environments through language and graphic communication. Magnetic Fields is a research project exploring the vision of Ebenezer Howard, whose book 'Garden Cities of To-morrow', outlined social and urban reform proposals. The document, published in 1902, offered a utopian manifesto where towns would be free of slums and poverty, with residents having an opportunity to enjoy rural and urban benefits through the designed Garden Cities. The work visually translates the design of communities, interpreting the diagrammatic graphic language of the plans outlined by Howard. This work formed a solo exhibition at South Square Gallery, Bradford.
Justin has interdisciplinary interests in Art and Design and is involved in event and conference organisation within the school and externally. Over the past 4 years Justin has interviewed and presented a number of authors, such as Julian Bell, Jessica Cerasi, Martin Gayford, Kelly Grovier, Simon Jenkins and John Thackara at The Ilkley Literature Festival, as part of the 250 events that take place each year.
