Michael Powell’s practice’s primary concern is image making, located around painting, found photography, collage and installation. Working with oil paint on acrylic sheets, painted elements converse with partially obscured digitally printed collages which reference popular culture and art history. Occasionally working through narrative series, found objects such as inflatables hint at the hidden fictions and realities at play within appropriated stories from film and television referenced within the visual plane, their narratives offer reflections of our past and present conditions. Powell foregrounds a studio based approach to making, emphasising experimentation and intuitive aesthetic decision making. Powell encourage these models of working in his teaching, stressing process and experimental methodologies.
