Lead Chaplain - Melvyn Kelly
"An ordained minister, I joined the Chaplaincy team as Methodist Chaplain in September 2016. I grew up in the West Riding - I'm from Rastrick originally - so it is good to be back in Yorkshire after 15 years in Lancashire! Originally, a solicitor I left the magistrates' courts behind in favour of the pulpit and headed down the coast to the sea-side town of Bridlington. For 21 years, I was the minister of churches in Bridlington and Ormskirk. In Ormskirk I served in the Multifaith Chaplaincy at Edge Hill University.
As a chaplain, I'm always ready for a chat – about anything! I offer pastoral care to students and staff and encourage them to explore faith, spirituality and worship. Chaplaincy offers a perfect setting for creating community, encouraging good relationships between people of different faith traditions or none and exploring together values of unity, peace, justice and love.
Origami has been a hobby since childhood and is a great stress-buster – in fact, origami is increasingly being acknowledged as an effective practice for mindfulness and wellbeing. I am married to Karen. I have three grown-up children and five grandchildren but am kept busy these days by my eleven-year-old daughter."
You can choose to see Melvyn or any of our chaplains, or ask to be referred to an advisor of another faith. Call the main office on 0113 343 5071 to check availability or just drop in to the Emmanuel Centre on Woodhouse Lane.
Jewish Chaplain - Eli Magzimof
Rabbi Eli Magzimof and his wife Rivka have made a fabulous impact since they arrived in September 2014, building incredibly close relationships with many of the estimated 1500 Jewish students across Yorkshire. They are great fun and provide regular events for students in Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and beyond. There are also regional events to ensure that this major student hub is brought together. Known as the 'Running Rabbi', Eli - a former Paratrooper in the Israeli Defence Forces - ran the London Marathon for University Jewish Chaplaincy to help raise vital funds. They are a dynamic couple who will do anything in their power to make your university journey exciting and meaningful.
