Welcome to the MSc programme in Building Services Engineering

This handbook provides you with information that you will need on your course. You should find it helpful when you first start, when you are preparing for assessment and at any time that you need help or advice in connection with your studies here. You will also receive a Module Handbook for each module you study on your course and these should be used to direct your studies, contained within these documents is information concerning the assessments for the module, and the schedule of classes and an introduction to highlight the subject matter and resources for each topic area

The course team is looking forward to working with you this year and we hope that your time studying with us is both enjoyable and successful.

The School curricula encompasses sustainability embracing broader social, economic, and environmental issues fundamental to understanding, preserving, and enriching the built, natural and digital environments.

As a School we strive to be student-centred and value your opinions and feedback. We want to hear about the things you enjoy and that you think we do well, but also want to know when you think there are ways in which we can improve your experience. There are many ways in which you can provide feedback including through your student academic representatives, through written or on-line module evaluation feedback forms and through student open meetings, forums with staff and student representative meetings with me.

We maintain a strong commitment to our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and our facilities are well equipped for each major area of our course provision. Our Built Environment, Planning, Human Geography and Civil and Building Services Engineering courses are situated in the heart of the City at Northern Terrace Building, with the Computing and Electrical and Electronic Engineering courses located in Caedmon Building at our Headingley Campus.

If you are studying on campus, where possible, the majority of your teaching will take place at the School’s buildings; however, some teaching sessions may be scheduled in other buildings on our City Campus and Headingley Campus. The City Campus library is located in the Leslie Silver Building, which is adjacent to Northern Terrace, while the James Graham Building houses the library at our Headingley Campus.

This academic year, because of the need to maintain social distance as a result of Covid-19, thereby keep both students and staff safe, the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing will be using a blended learning approach. All essential delivery will take place online and this will include lectures, seminars and virtual drop-in sessions. Some limited face-to-face sessions (for example tutorials/seminars/workshop) will be delivered onsite to provide additional small-group learning opportunities. For those who are unable to visit us on campus, these face-to-face sessions will be recorded and made available electronically. In addition, courses that have laboratory work and practical sessions, where these cannot be delivered in any alternative way will be arranged for students to come to Campus for the sessions. The delivery methods will be reviewed as we know more about Covid-19 through Government advice and directives.

This document probably includes the most important steps for you to understand your course which is operated by the Asian Institute of Built Environment (AIBE) on behalf of Leeds Beckett University. Certainly, you have made the right choice. Here, you will be able to learn and apply your knowledge to the work place. Please read through this whole document. To draw your attention, I would like to stress three points. First, commitment is of course the first directive of yourselves as you will need to sacrifice your free time to focus on your studies in order to successfully get the award. Class attendance is of utmost importance because only by attending classes that you could really learn from the lecturers, or otherwise, you may have a high probability of failing the modules. The consequences may be re-examination, retaking the module or the worst of all, termination. So, please work hard and try your best! Listening to the oral explanation and taking notes are two key activities when you attend a lecture. Such notes will certainly help you a lot with your preparing your coursework and the final examinations. Second, we are here to support and help you make your dreams come true. Please ensure that you remain in contact with us at the AIBE, and all my colleagues are very happy to provide guidance and advice as appropriate to help you successfully complete your studies. Course Overview

The course aims to develop and provide the following:

1. To focus upon systems design and implementation

2. Extend knowledge of sustainable technologies and resolution of emerging issues in the built environment

3. Develop project management, leadership and team skills

4. Provide the opportunity for students to complete a range of optional modules which will facilitate the development of their knowledge and problem-solving skills suited to their working environment and general interest in the building services field

5. Develop the student’s research methods and applications


Demonstrate appropriate skills in order to progress their academic and subsequent professional careers as creative and innovative engineers and managers


Analyse problems and make contribution to advances in engineering, technological and social issues associated with the building services industry


Critically analyse and project management skills including team working and leadership skills in application to Building Services problems


Analyse issues and concepts in respect to the Building Services technologies and related sciences in the resolution of Building Services problems


Complete studies in a range of optional modules which will facilitate the development of their knowledge and problem solution skills, which are suited to their working environment


Develop the student’s research methods and applications
and use appropriate communication skills so that the graduates may convey their ideas effectively and imaginatively in a clear and concise manner to both the related professions and to persons outside the industry

Assessment & Feedback

On this course students will be assessed through a mix of coursework and presentations. There is a 60 credit point Masters Project/Dissertation module which includes Research Skills and will require the production of a 3000 word Research proposal and a 15000 word dissertation.

Please note the exam/assessment periods in the academic calendar and make sure that you are available during those periods. Further details of your schedule of examinations can be found on your timetable once the examination schedule is released. Coursework submission deadlines can normally be found on MyBeckett, on course noticeboards or in individual Module Handbooks/other module guides.

It is important for your progression and achievement that you submit all work for all assignments in a timely manner. It is also important that you keep copies of all work submitted until after you have graduated. You should also keep any receipts confirming the submission of assignments. In the event of your submitted work being lost you may be required to produce a copy of the work and submission receipt. If you are unable to do so, your work will not be marked.

It is important to note that submitting all assignments is a requirement of your course. Should you experience extenuating circumstances which prevent you from submitting on time please make yourself aware of the Mitigation and Extenuating Circumstances process. Without any form of extenuating circumstances, standard penalties apply for late submission of assessed work. Full details of the penalties for late submission of course work are available in section 3.11 of the Academic Regulations at Please check the penalties that apply to this course as some Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body requirements may mean that different penalties apply.

If you have been recommended ‘flexibility around deadlines’ as a reasonable adjustment in a Reasonable Adjustment Plan, your Course Administrator will be able to advise you of the process.

Assessed work will normally be returned with appropriate feedback within four weeks of your submission. Each Module Handbook will provide you with specific guidelines on how and when you will receive feedback on your assessments.

Results from module assessments and decisions on progression to the next level of study (e.g., from Level 4 to Level 5 of an undergraduate degree) or awards (if you are in the final level) will be notified via email.

Results will be notified in five working days after the date of the Progression and Award Board meeting (the meeting where your end of level outcome will be decided) or the Module Board meeting (the meeting where modular outcomes are decided).

If you are unsure about when you might receive your results or have queries relating to your results, you should contact your Course Administrator.

If you have not passed a module at the first attempt you will be eligible for re-assessment. See your Module Handbook for details of the relevant re-assessment process (e.g., whether it is coursework, an examination, a presentation or other form of assessment/when it will take place/what the deadline is). You will be advised via email of your options for re-assessment. You are advised to contact your Course Director, Course Administrator or Academic Advisor for any necessary clarification.

Teaching & Learning

Students will experience a blended approach to learning for 2020/21; this is a mix of face-to-face, on campus, online, and digital content, teaching and learning. The proportion of activities will be adjusted referring to HKSAR Government/ Authorities (e.g. Centre for Health Protection of Department of Health)/ Education Bureau’s announcement and the current situation in Hong Kong.

We are working to 1.5 metre social distancing guidelines for Teaching Block 1, and therefore are not planning to deliver teaching to large groups on campus for this period. This will ensure that maximum space will be available for small-group teaching (this will be reviewed on a regular basis).
In most cases, the taught content will also be available online so students can access this if they are not able to attend campus due to the pandemic (for example, due to self-isolation, shielding or travel restrictions). There will be digital content and recorded lectures available online to support students who may be unable to travel to campus. In some circumstances, other formal taught sessions may also be recorded.

In the event of a further government lockdown in response to Covid-19, we will prioritise digital and online learning and support to enable students to continue with their studies.

Students are required to sign off attendance sheet for each module.

If you are considering withdrawal from your course you should speak to your personal tutor / academic advisor to discuss your reasons. If there is a problem, staff at your delivery provider or the University may be able to help. It may be possible to arrange suspension of studies from your course.

If you are considering withdrawing, permanently or temporarily, you must complete a withdrawal form, which you can obtain from the administrative staff at your delivery provider. This form must be submitted as soon as possible as withdrawals cannot normally be backdated. For further details see the Student Regulations.

Professional Accreditation or Recognition Associated with the Course

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and AIBE specially register this PSRB recognition status at the Education Bureau, Hong Kong.

Skills, Employability & Graduate Opportunities

On completion of the course, you will have the opportunity to develop and enhance the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles, technologies and methods learned in your previous study necessary for a career in the building services engineering and allied industries ; enabling their appreciation of its scientific and engineering context, and to support their understanding of historical, current, and future developments and technologies.

You will develop the ability to analyse building services system through appropriate tools, methods and techniques, developing appropriate quantitative solutions and communicate the results of those analyses in a form appropriate to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

On completion of the course you will be able to creatively design innovative solutions to problems including an investigation and identification of the appropriate legal, economic, social, aesthetic and environmental constraints where applicable.

By the end of the course you will have developed the skills to undertake projects to a professional standard by the consistent application and review of development, management and evaluation methods and techniques.

On completion of the course you will further consolidate your understanding of the processes and mechanisms within the context of sustainability and how these are employed in the production of a viable and cost effective engineering solutions mapped against energy efficiency using the characteristic tools, equipment, processes and products of the discipline of building services engineering, and be able to use the technical literature and other information sources to develop that understanding over the course of your professional careers.

Policies, Standards & Regulations

There are a number of PSRB exemptions which apply to the MSc Building Services Engineering award which are outside of the Leeds Beckett University’s standard Academic Principles and Regulations. These exceptions have already been approved by the University and are required if the accreditation status of the home-delivery version of the course is to be maintained.

In accordance with the University’s standard Academic Principles and Regulations, students must pass 180 credit points of Level 7 learning in order to be eligible for their target award. However, the PSRB exemptions require that:

• The overall award pass mark is set at 50٪

The External Examiner assures that you are assessed fairly in relation to other students on the same course and also that the standard of your own award is comparable to similar courses taken by students in other higher education institutions within the UK. The External Examiner(s) provide an annual report for your course.
