Who We Are
Founded in 1824 with over 100 years of quality teaching, we are one of the largest universities in the UK and one of the largest employers in our city. Our community is made up of people from a range of social and cultural backgrounds and we are proud that our friendliness, warm welcome and professionalism are consistently commented on by our colleagues and students as well as guests at events such as open days, graduation ceremonies and guest lectures.
Our values, which are the principles that guide the way we do things, are that we should be:
- Student focus
What We Achieve
Our University is a rewarding place to work, as we nurture and prepare our students for their futures and their satisfaction is a priority. Our National Student Survey (NSS) results have shown an increase in overall student satisfaction from 69% in 2009 to 80% in 2014. We were also 1st in the UK in a survey of international students for size of classes and assessment, and 1st in the UK and 4th in the world for personal tutors (out of 53 universities, source: International Student Barometer Autumn Wave 2013).
Our alumni community keeps in touch with us, with former students returning to campus to inspire the next generation of graduates; nine out of ten (93.7%) of whom were in work or further study six months after graduating (source: HESA Performance Indicator 2012/13).
Headingley and City
Being located in the largest financial and legal district outside of London makes us a popular university for our staff, students and graduates alike.
We develop our talent through a range of training and development opportunities available through initiatives such as our extensive People Development Programme, discounted postgraduate study and University development funding. We are also rated at the highest levels of 4* and 3* in Sports-Related Studies, putting us in the top six institutions in the country for sport research, in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise results.
We truly are committed to supporting our staff with tailored and targeted programmes at every stage of their career, whether that’s through an accredited ILM course or attaining teacher fellow status with the Higher Education Academy.
Staff are also recognised through annual awards ceremonies, including our Students’ Union-led staff awards, The Golden Robes, where our students nominate colleagues for their teaching and support.
Demonstrating a commitment to keeping colleagues and students safe.
Working here means you will also have access to a wide range of benefits including our generous pension schemes, excellent holiday entitlements, flexible working, reduced study fees, subsidised fitness facilities and a lot more. We have been awarded ten consecutive RoSPA Gold Medals for Occupational Safety and Health which meant that we were awarded the President’s Award in 2019.
Our estate is as diverse as our community, spread across two campuses, both in fantastic and distinctive locations. Our City Campus, in the heart of the city centre, features a modern learning and working environment in award-winning buildings such as Rose Bowl and Broadcasting Place. In contrast, just three miles away, our historic and leafy Headingley Campus provides a more traditional setting, set in beautiful and lush parkland fringed with historic buildings dating from 1752. We have additional teaching facilities and offices at the Carnegie Stand and Carnegie Pavilion, a multi-use building managed in partnership with Yorkshire County Cricket Club, overlooking the rugby and cricket pitches at the world-famous Headingley Carnegie Stadium.
Equality and Diversity at Leeds Beckett
We work and study in a local, national and international context, attracting staff and students from a wide range of backgrounds, faiths and cultures. Our people define us as an organisation and respecting and valuing who we are is an integral part of working and studying at Leeds Beckett. Respect is a core value.
We believe that everyone should have the same access to opportunities and are part of a number of charters and frameworks to help us achieve this.
