National Award in Special Education Needs Coordination

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally have at least a second-class honours degree. Applicants who do not meet this requirement may be considered if they have significant relevant experience. All Applicants must also have either Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for teaching in schools or have Qualified Teacher of Learning and Skills (QTLS) for teaching in post-compulsory education, or EYTS for teaching in Early Years. Following the course, those with EYTS, rather than QTS, will only be able to work as a SENCO in Early Years settings.

Applicants will also need to have completed a satisfactory Induction Period in a school. Please note that, although it is not a requirement for entry on to the course, it is important, for the purposes of the assessment, that applicants are currently based in an educational working environment i.e. a school, virtual school, college or local authority, and have access to SEN related data. SENCOS currently employed in English state-maintained schools must complete their SENCO training within the first three years of their appointment.
