MSc

Sports and Exercise Therapy

Teaching & Learning

What you'll learn

This module will develop your knowledge of anatomy, physiology and function in relation to normal movement and sports. You will gain knowledge in completing joint assessment and examination, along with restoring normal joint function.
This module aims to provide and prepare you with the theoretical knowledge - along with a safe - clinically justified application of Sports Therapy skills.
This module teaches you the life support principles to the level of the recognised first aid at work programme in the context of sports trauma management of individual and team athletes.
Develop your understanding of research with a focus on the systematic review process. You'll undertake an independent research project, facilitated by workshops delivered by your staff teaching team and assigned supervisor. Your achievement will be assessed through submission of a written report and supplementary files in the style of a journal article.
You will incorporate a theoretical and practical approach which develops your comprehensive understanding of injury management. You will explore key underpinning knowledge, skills and evidence for rehabilitation strategies for athletic populations, and critically review treatment strategies for conservative and surgical options inclusive of specific controlled conditions.
Develop your clinical reasoning skills in the assessment of sports injuries, complex clinical presentations and pathophysiology. You will build on your critical thinking, analysis and reflection skills with this module.
Gain experiential learning opportunities within the broad spectrum of the Sports and Exercise Therapy contexts, under direct supervision of academic staff and industry professionals.

What you'll learn

Explore specific aspects of the structure and function of the neuromuscular system and their relationship with intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The module provides you with an understanding of the mechanical basis of joint and muscle function, and develops your understanding of the relationship between external and internal loading factors which can lead to injury.
Gain a detailed and critical understanding of the application of cardiopulmonary exercise testing and prescription in populations with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions. You will evaluate the contribution of exercise testing to the diagnosis and prognosis for these conditions.
Develop your clinical reasoning skills in the assessment of sports injuries, complex clinical presentations and pathophysiology. You will build on your critical thinking, analysis and reflection skills with this module.
Consider the acute physiological responses to exercise and chronic physiological adaptations to training. This module will provide you with a detailed evaluation of contemporary exercise testing and prescription methods.
