Sport Performance Analysis

Teaching & Learning

What you'll learn

Drawing on your existing experiences, this module will encourage you to take a deeper look at your own sport. You'll examine the various demands of your sport and how these change with time and development.
This module will introduce you to different styles and approaches to research design and analysis, and a more critical approach to theory and evidence. The knowledge you develop will provide the basis for your own master's level research.
In the age of big data and technology, the use of data to assist in the delivery of insights to a wide range of audiences (e.g., coaches, strength and conditioning staff, sports medicine practitioners) is key. This involves the collection, storage, cleaning, analysis and visualisation stages of the data journey. In this module, you'll develop knowledge relating to applied research methods, statistical analysis and data science techniques within a performance sport context.
In modern sport, performance analysis plays a key role in helping coaches and athletes understand and optimise performance. The ability to efficiently and effectively collect the most relevant and accurate data through the most appropriate quantitative and/or qualitative means is becoming one of the most important and prominent roles of the sport performance analyst. In this module, you'll develop the ability to identify and implement a range of measurement techniques to analyse sport performance.
This module will facilitate your continuing professional development and support your progression towards professional registration or further study. You could gain specific professional qualifications in parallel with this module. These qualifications will help raise your awareness of the interdisciplinary nature of the professional practitioner's role.
This module will provide the opportunity to demonstrate and enhance your skills, including independence of thought. You’ll hone your ability to synthesise and apply knowledge, as well as add to an existing body of knowledge. You’ll engage in the negotiation, planning, implementation and evaluation of a Major Independent Study relevant to your course and personal interests.

What you'll learn

Develop an in-depth and critical understanding of the physiological foundations of sports conditioning. This module will develop your ability as a practitioner to enhance athletic potential using a detailed, scientific evidence-based approach, linking theory to practical applications.
Working as a performance analyst has never been more varied. Some of the roles of modern-day analysts include undertaking talent ID and recruitment projects, providing detailed scouting reports on upcoming opponents, managing data sets to improve the health and wellbeing of athletes, and identifying current and future performance trends. This module will expose you to a set of wide-ranging contemporary applications of performance analysis. It will develop your understanding of the skills and principles required to underpin high-quality professional practice regardless of role or context.
Deepen your understanding of how to effectively design learning activities and coach-athlete interactions. You'll evaluate theories of skill acquisition and learning that are prevalent in and/or challenge current practice.
