What you'll learn

Examine occupation and its central contribution to human life and health across the lifespan. You'll develop knowledge of the basic concepts of occupational science and be introduced to the history and philosophy of occupational therapy.
Develop your therapeutic skills and the mandatory training required for practice placement. This module will introduce you to self-awareness and managing your own wellbeing.
Learn and apply the occupational therapy process to people from diverse backgrounds and within different practice contexts. You'll understand the relevance of occupation centred-practice and occupation-based and/or focused intervention that enable occupational potential and identity.
This module will introduce you to evidence for practice, including policy, research, practice guidelines, audit, expert opinion and practice-based evidence. You'll develop skills in searching for, and appraising evidence.
Observe occupational therapy in a supervised, appropriate, health and social care setting. You'll begin to understand the application of professional skills, knowledge and behaviours in order to work in a safe and ethical manner with patients/service users.
Apply the knowledge and skills necessary for professional occupational therapy practice during this five-week practice placement module. You'll observe and practice occupational therapy and reflect on your performance. You'll also consider how theory is applied in practice, including how to engage with service users, apply the occupational therapy process and understand the importance of clinical reasoning and multidisciplinary working.

What you'll learn

Explore global and local contexts which impact on health and occupational engagement, including political, social, cultural, economic, digital and environmental settings. This module will draw on knowledge from other disciplines such as: health promotion, politics, social sciences, human geography, information technology, anthropology, cultural studies and sociology.
Building on the Evidence for Practice module, this module further develops skills and knowledge of research design and methods. You'll be introduced to literature searching and appraising; research gaps; how to construct research questions; how to apply research methodologies and methods; and research ethics.
During this placement, you'll practice occupational therapy, including assessments and interventions. You'll begin to develop your own clinical reasoning and make decisions about service users. You'll also be encouraged to engage in self-reflection and integrate theory into practice.

Engage in a six-week practice placement within a role emerging, diverse or traditional setting. You'll apply an occupational perspective to an identified area of sustainable development.
This placement consolidates the knowledge and skills required of an occupational therapist. It is an opportunity to demonstrate that you’re ready to make the transition to practice. You'll be able to utilise the occupational therapy process with more complex clients and recognise the importance of clinical reasoning, evidence-based practice, collaborative inter-professional working relationships, quality assurance and leadership.
