How does tourism development really affect destinations? In this module, you'll consider the impacts of tourism and the roles of polices in influencing these effects through the lens of economic concepts and reasoning. To start, you'll focus on assessing the economic impact of tourism on destinations in a global context. Next, you'll delve into local, national and international policies which have a bearing on the tourism industry. This will enable you to explore the relevance of these policies in making destinations more sustainable and resilient. You'll gain a solid grounding in tourism impacts and responsible tourism development, fine tuning your employability skills in problem-solving, critical thinking and data analysis.
Dive into the intricacies of crisis management in the tourism and hospitality sector. We'll explore the assessment of risks associated with tourism and hospitality performance, operations and branding. Additionally, we'll develop strategies to anticipate, mitigate, respond to and manage crises, both at destination and business levels. You'll cover a huge variety of crisis typologies - from those that affect the destination overall: natural disasters, resources shortage, epidemics and conflicts; to business-specific issues like system failures, cybersecurity breaches, operational accidents and cases of harassment. This module will develop your essential skills in problem-solving, complex adaptive thinking, contingency planning, and professional and personal resilience.
Gain the knowledge, skills and techniques to successfully conceive, plan and execute the research element of a major independent research project at master's level. This module enables you to understand the process of designing and conducting research as you build your skills to undertake research on a relevant topic of interest within the events, tourism, hospitality and allied sectors. You'll identify, critique and apply appropriate subject-specific literature and theories, research designs, methods and strategies for the investigation of and recommendation of solutions to the identified issue/s.
On this module, you'll take a critical approach to the management of human resources. We'll encourage you to be critical and questioning of concepts, theories and models of human resource management, evaluating how they apply to the international hospitality context. You'll choose a contemporary issue in the hospitality industry to explore and assess how human resource managers can effectively deal with that issue. Upon completion, you'll be a critical thinker, able to demonstrate when and how these concepts, theories and models are useful to real-life scenarios. In addition, you'll be able to suggest effective solutions to actual problems.
Embark on a comprehensive project closely aligned with current challenges in the tourism and hospitality sectors. Depending on your interests and career goals, you'll choose between a consultancy-oriented project or a dissertation-style research project. Working independently or in small groups, you'll apply advanced problem-solving strategies and project management skills to tackle a brief provided by external industry clients. This module will enhance your competencies, knowledge, and professionalism, ensuring you're well-equipped to manage and successfully complete your project. We'll encourage you to employ innovative solutions to real-world problems. You'll also have opportunities to establish and expand your professional network throughout.
