Teaching & Learning

The tabs below detail what and how you will study in each year of your course. The balance of assessments and overall workload is indicative and may be subject to change.

What you'll learn

Develop the academic skills you'll need to study in Higher Education, including information retrieval, academic writing and how to avoid plagiarism. You'll also learn what it means to be a professional with an understanding of the HCPC and CSP professional values and standards, including continuous professional development and lifelong learning. This module will also enhance your personal and professional skills through verbal and non‐verbal communication skills, components of assessment, and documentation. You'll also complete mandatory training for clinical placement.
You'll undertake a one-week (37.5 hours) taster placement with pass/fail marking. This placement must be passed for the Shaping the Professional module to be passed.
Study the fundamental anatomical and physiological principles that underpin physiotherapy practice in the musculoskeletal client groups. You'll learn about the physiological changes that occur in the ageing process and in basic pathological processes. This module will also cover how the anatomical structures interact to fulfil the requirements for normal movement. You'll be able to demonstrate the application of basic clinical assessment, observation and measurement skills.
Exercise prescription is a corner stone of physiotherapy. This module will cover fundamental exercise prescription theories in relation to evidence base for those with and without health issues. You'll learn in both one-to-one and group-based scenarios.
This module will cover the fundamental anatomical and physiological principles that underpin physiotherapy practice in the neurological client groups. You'll learn about the physiological changes that occur in the ageing process and in basic pathological processes. This module will also cover how the anatomical structures interact to fulfil the requirements for normal movement. You'll be able to demonstrate the application of basic clinical assessment, observation and measurement skills.
Explore the fundamental anatomical and physiological principles that underpin physiotherapy practice in the cardiovascular client groups. You'll learn about the physiological changes that occur in the ageing process and in basic pathological processes. This module will also cover how the anatomical structures interact to fulfil the requirements for normal thoracic movement. You'll be able to demonstrate the application of basic clinical assessment, observation and measurement skills.
Begin to understand the context of evidence-based practice in physiotherapy. You'll explore literature searching, critical analysis of different types of literature, use of relevant tools and databases.

What you'll learn

Gain the skills and knowledge required to work effectively with clients presenting with a range of cardio-vascular or respiratory relayed problems. You will develop theoretical and practical skills of assessment and management for these client groups.
Learn how to work effectively in a musculoskeletal environment. You'll develop theoretical and practical skills of assessment and management of common musculoskeletal conditions.
Gain an overview of neurological physiotherapy by identifying the underlying relevant principles of rehabilitation.
Prepare for clinical experience and gain a breadth of supervised physiotherapy experience in the clinical setting. In the theory-practice transfer, you'll be able to apply, integrate and build upon knowledge, skills and physiotherapeutic techniques, health promotion and client empowerment. This will enable you to further develop your understanding of care and management of patients. The placement provides you with the opportunity to attain a minimum of 225 clinical-based practice hours in order to complete the required minimum 1,000 hours at the completion of the course.

Build on your knowledge and skills gained within the core modules; cardiovascular and respiratory physiotherapy, neurological physiotherapy and musculoskeletal physiotherapy. You'll integrate your learning to enable development and modification of communication skills with individuals, groups and teams within the varied clinical settings.
Develop the key knowledge and strategies that underpin health-based research. This module will develop your understanding of research and your ability to undertake research. You'll build on the knowledge of evidence-based practice that you developed in your first year.

Build upon your year 2 physiotherapy practice and clinical experience enabling further development of clinical reasoning and your personal communication skills. This will be through a greater self-awareness, looking at philosophy and its relevance to clinical practice, examining and debating ethical decision making in the wider clinical reasoning framework. You'll also explore healthcare communication models with exposure to the patient's perspective of healthcare in complex and marginalised population groups.
Develop the research knowledge that you started to build in your first year. This module will enable you to choose and work on a project that has relevance in the health and social care environment. You'll produce a piece of work that explains and justifies the proposed process of your research enquiry and its application to practice.
Understand changing NHS policy, organisational, leadership business and enterprise theory as it impacts on physiotherapy practice. An enquiry based ethos, specialist speakers and NHS managers will enable you to prepare for employability and future practice as a physiotherapy practitioner.
