This course aims to provide an effective, coherent and intellectually challenging postgraduate education in construction management. It will enhance your abilities in the identification and evaluation of appropriate decision-making strategies and it will allow you to develop research capability and cognitive skills, enabling you to analyse problems and identify effective solutions in their professional context.

What you'll learn

Develop in-depth knowledge of procurement strategies and their impact on stakeholders' priorities and the ability to manage related risks effectively. Gain a critical understanding of complex contractual issues and the processes and tools to analyse those issues. You will also critically evaluate innovative practices in construction project procurement and professional knowledge of new developments in construction contracts law.
Develop a critical understanding of the concepts, methodologies and techniques involved in the management of teams at project and corporate level to deliver successful innovation.
Develop a critical and in-depth knowledge of the changes imposed to the industry as a result of digital technologies and smart functionalities, and the integrated management processes to deliver socially responsible and sustainable construction projects.
Equips you with various tools, techniques and theories to assist you in senior management roles and enables you to direct corporate policies in property and services related areas.
This module will prepare you for successful execution of independent research projects. You'll plan, conduct, and present your own research using styles that are appropriate for formal academic presentations.

What you'll learn

Gain an understanding of the project organisational and strategic issues critical to the successful delivery of construction projects. Strong emphasis will be placed on the integration of theory and practice.
Gain an advanced level of understanding and critical analysis of portfolio and programme management and its relationship to projects in a strategic environment.
Develop a critical understanding of the concepts, methodologies and techniques involved in risk and value management at construction project and corporate levels. You will learn to analyse, critically appraise and perform complex project decision-making and associated risk and value management in construction projects.
Gain an understanding of planning and control techniques that are used to manage projects. This module will cover the planning, monitoring and control of project aspects including project definition, programming, budgeting and quality management.
Study the law and practice of adjudication as a method of dispute resolution as it applies to construction contracts and as defined in the amended Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996.
Study the function and effectiveness of legal principles in the resolution of design/construction problems and learn how to apply these principles to avoid or resolve such difficulties.
An introduction to the principles and practice of commercial mediation, this module will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the main elements of commercial mediation, conciliation and expert determination, enabling you to play an effective role in resolving disputes using these methods.
Studying the background to tortious and contractual claims, you will learn how to best present a claim in arbitration, adjudication or litigation.
Address the technological aspects of construction primarily related to structure, fabric and finishes, including sustainability issues that apply to the built environment.
This module will provide you with an understanding, awareness, evaluation and critical perspective of new products and processes as well as significant technological changes that are capable of enhancing the management of design, construction and building infrastructures.
Gain an awareness of the theory and practice, including management, of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as well as its origin, role and significance within the construction industry. You will be able to develop relevant professional skills required of construction professionals for effectively executing a project that involves the use of BIM.
