In the Carnegie School of Education we house a vibrant and growing community of around 100 research students across a number of research degree programmes offered in our School. These programmes include the MRes, PhD and EdD and our students are a mix of part time and full time. Some students are also members of staff in the Carnegie School. Others work externally at other universities or in a range of public sector and industry contexts and still others are working full time on their doctorates. Our students are funded in a variety of ways by scholarships from external bodies such as government, industry and research organisations, University and School scholarships and also self and employer funds. Our students come from a variety of countries. As such there is a richness of intellectual social and professional experience across our research student body. We see this as a very strong starting point for our commitment to dialogue and growth within our School’s research community. This rich diversity of experience chimes strongly with the Carnegie School of Education’s mission to put social justice at the heart of our practice underpinned by a commitment to inclusion through the creation of a space for dialogue and challenge in learning.
We carry our School’s commitment to diversity, innovation and social justice into the substantive areas and theoretical and methodological expertise developed across our research specialisms. We are proud of bringing a distinctively critical edge to our work in practice engaged research through these specialisms race, education and decoloniality, LGBTQ+ inclusion, coaching and mentoring, creativity and mental health where we are achieving a range of firsts nationally and internationally. Prospective candidates should explore the links to our various specialist areas represented in the links above to make connections to their own thinking in preparation for making a research application to us.
As a School we are committed to developing a collective, collegiate and enabling intellectual culture for our research students to grow in. We have a dedicated Research Hub at the heart of School activity. This is a place where research students and research dedicated staff and overseas visitors have space to study and meet. We have a Research Student Steering Group that represents students views in relation to School policy and that feeds into the development of research degrees provision.
