Our Human Resources team, through our community of colleagues across LBU, is committed to partnering with all areas of our university to support the achievement of our strategic objectives. Whilst working closely together as one service, colleagues within HR form a number of distinct teams as follows:

We are the main point of contact for employee relations advice, sickness absence and performance management, dispute resolution and problem solving for university managers and colleagues, and we also liaise regularly with the university's trade union representatives. We work closely with the HR business partners, supporting them on organisational change processes. We also get involved with various HR projects and work with other teams within the wider HR service.

The HR Support team oversees the administrative support provided to the executive director of HR, deputy director of HR and associate directors of HR, HR business partners and occupational health.

We provide support for the following committees:

  • Senior Staff Remuneration Committee
  • Joint Consultative Committee
  • Wellbeing Sub-Committee

We co-ordinate the annual Academic Promotions Round.

We co-ordinate visiting academic applications (visiting professors and readers, emeritus professors etc) including advice on when title roles are due to expire.

We maintain and update particular university email groups (deans of school, heads of subject, course directors and directors of research).

We work in partnership with senior leaders of schools and services to provide support and guidance on strategic business projects and issues, including workforce planning, organisational design and performance and colleague wellbeing and engagement. We also lead on the HR aspects of change programmes.

We work with colleagues across HR to ensure that the service is aware of and delivers the needs of schools and services, including identifying and supporting learning and development requirements, performance improvement and other organisational development initiatives, and to develop and apply data to inform long term planning.

Our team manages all of the contractual activity associated with the full employee lifecycle, from the recruitment of colleagues right through to those leaving our university.

  • For all recruitment related advice, including how to get your vacancy approved, where to advertise and find the best candidates, interviews, right through to the issuing of contracts for all new starters and subsequent probation processes. We also enable access to recruitment and selection training for colleagues and student panels
  • For information to support international colleagues on immigration matters ensuring visa compliance
  • In relation to all contractual changes, responsibility allowances, secondments, leaver processes, requests for new roles to be evaluated
  • To seek advice on administrative HR policy and processes including:
    • Maternity
    • Paternity
    • Flexible working
    • Leavers
    • Associates
    • Special leave
    • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks
  • We also manage the engagement of student casual workers, supporting areas to recruit, onboard and engage appropriately ensuring compliance with employment and immigration laws

  • Process five payrolls per month for support, academic, casual, miscellaneous employees and a pensioners payroll
  • Administrator pensions for four different providers - Local Government Pension Scheme (West Yorkshire Pension Fund), Teachers Pension Scheme, University Superannuation Scheme and the government NEST scheme
  • Process overtime/additional hours claims
  • Process expense payments submitted via ESS
  • Deal with statutory payments and deductions i.e. SSP, SMP, Tax and National Insurance
  • Process monthly and year end reports for statutory bodies (such as HMRC) and our pension scheme providers
  • Administer childcare vouchers, cycle scheme and employee travel schemes
  • Voluntary deduction such as Simply Health, Unison, GAYE and Credit Union

We provide professional, objective advice on managing health issues in the workplace and are a confidential and impartial service. We contribute to the university's compliance in regards to health and safety legislation.

We are all qualified practitioners and registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the General Medical Council respectively and hold additional specialist qualifications in the field of occupational health.
