The School of Built Environment, Engineering & Computing is a community of committed staff and students who are passionate about their subject areas. We want to make a difference to the way we plan, design, construct, protect and maintain the world around us. The School aims to produce the technology and the systems that make the smart city work and the digital economy function and secure.


We want you to have a real-world impact, explore the human applications of various areas of expertise, and to feed off the opportunities this dynamic city and region have to offer; and to do this in partnership with our team of respected practitioners and researchers - an academic community that aims to fuse the creative with the technical.


The School brings together a range of courses including construction, surveying, planning, human geography, civil engineering, electronic and electrical engineering, robotics and automation, computer science, computer forensics and security, project management, data science and building services engineering.


Our courses are focused on your learning needs, rooted in practice-based, industry-oriented and collaborative learning. Our aim is to foster your creative and technological skills, as well as your ability to be an expansive, independent and imaginative thinker and doer.


We are delighted to welcome curious and self-motivated multi-taskers, keen to take advantage of our unique student societies, apprenticeships, industrial placement and internships opportunities. 


With our strong industry links our students have the opportunity to gain hands on experience, undertake work placements and find employment after their study. Our research is focused on the production of pure and applied knowledge that contributes to the creation and management of a sustainable built environment. The focus of our activities is on low carbon housing, sustainable water supplies and construction materials for the developing world, construction industry knowledge exchange and planning policy. The School draws together expertise in sustainability research with the aim of building a record of research that is focused on the technological and social aspects of sustainable urbanism.

Built Environment Careers Fair

We want you to have the best possible start to your career in industry and making sure you develop a network of professional contacts will be an important part of your educational experience with us. Every Autumn our School holds a Careers Fair which is attended by over 25 major employers from the Civil Engineering, Construction, Architecture and Planning sectors giving you the opportunity to secure graduate roles, placements and part-time employment.

International Collaborations

The school has a strong international outlook and welcomes students from across the globe – Leeds Beckett’s student community is made up of students from 143 countries and territories. We also have a number of international partnerships and collaborations with key organisations in Hong Kong and Mauritius.

The quality of our courses is recognised internationally and we have franchise partnerships in Hong Kong and Mauritius. These partnerships enable the delivery of our courses in country, with students graduating as a Leeds Beckett alumni – joining an alumni community of over 176,000 globally.
