Professor Fiona Fylan | Ten things I've done for money (and not regretted)
Join Professor Fiona Fylan for her inaugural professorial lecture where she will be sharing her adventures in behavioural research. From hospitals, cities, schools, bars and cars, Fiona explores how health psychology can be used to support sustainable behaviours.

Professor Fiona Fylan’s research is about gaining insights into human behaviour, as well as designing and evaluating interventions to change behaviour. This involves trying to understand people’s experiences and to see the world from their perspective. To do this, she spends time with people: watching, measuring, asking questions, listening, and hearing their stories.

In this lecture Fiona will talk about her research adventures. These include working with patients and clinicians to improve outcomes, making roads safer with the help of the public and road safety professionals and exploring how to better equip our homes and people to make them more energy efficient. Fiona will talk about things she’s done in laboratories, hospitals and schools, things in the country and things in the city, things in bars, and things in cars.

Underpinning all these research studies are theories of behaviour. Fiona will talk about how these theories can be applied and will give examples of how health psychology is being used to support sustainable behaviour today.

This lecture is part of Leeds Beckett University's inaugural professional lecture series.

Professor Fiona Fylan

Professor / School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing

Professor Fiona Fylan is a Health Psychologist who applies behavioural sciences to better understand behaviour and to develop and evaluate interventions to change behaviour. She works in areas such as energy use, transport choices, road user behaviour and healthcare provision.

Fiona leads the Sustainable Behaviour team within the Leeds Sustainability Institute, exploring a wide range of behaviours that encourage healthy people and places.

Fiona’s work is currently informing the UK's strategy on domestic energy use and climate change as she leads the social sciences research on gaining social licence for lower carbon heating.

Fiona is also the lead academic of the team of psychologists that develops road user behaviour change courses for UK police forces. Each year, over 1.5 million road users attend these world-leading, award-winning courses and Fiona ensures they apply the most appropriate techniques to achieve sustainable behaviour change.
