The final event in the Leeds Cultural Conversations series 2018/19. Presented by Dr Andrew Lawson. This talk examines the business strategies of Boston merchant Henry Lee, one of a number of American interlopers in a trade dominated by the British East India Company.

When his business failed in 1811, Lee organized a voyage to Calcutta to restore his lost fortune. The talk explores the ways in which Lee drew on his commercial skills and personal connections, immersing himself in the Bengal trading world.
