Event to explore how to manage diet and exercise with Type 1 diabetes
The event, part of Leeds Beckett’s Carnegie Conversations guest lecture series, will be held on Thursday 2 March at Headingley Campus and will see experts from the field take part in a panel debate.
Event organiser Dr Matthew Campbell, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Nutrition in the Carnegie School of Sport at Leeds Beckett, explained: “Most of us are able to exercise without giving it much thought, but it’s not that simple for people with Type 1 diabetes. If you have Type 1, or support someone who does, you’ll know that keeping your blood sugar levels within normal ranges can be a daily struggle. Add exercise or a physically active job to the mix and controlling Type 1 becomes even more of a challenge.
“Most people with Type 1 who exercise or are physically active know that it’s important to adjust their insulin and diet. They also know that it’s incredibly easy to get this wrong and, if they do, the consequences can be dangerous. If this is you, you’re not alone. The vast majority of people with Type 1 feel largely uninformed about insulin and diet around exercise and are afraid they won’t be able to manage their condition.
“This event will show how people can dramatically improve diabetes management around exercise or a physically demanding job and help people feel better informed and armed with practical strategies that are easy to fit into day-to-day life.”
Other panel members at the event include Dr Nicky Kime, a Senior Research Fellow at Leeds Beckett, specialising in young people with Type 1 diabetes, behaviour change and health psychology in community and education settings; Dr Andy Petit, an endocrinologist and diabetologist with Airedale Trust with specific interests in Type 1 Diabetes and exercise; Janet Carling, the lead diabetes specialist nurse for Harrogate and District Trust; as well as Simon Pickering, a Type 1 Diabetes patient representative who is actively engaging in sport and physical activity. James Thurlow, who also has Type 1 Diabetes, will be chairing the panel.
