Hockey teams face toughest challenge yet
Eighteen members of the men’s team will run five marathons across Yorkshire from Monday 23 May to Friday 27 May, with the gruelling challenge ending outside the James Graham building, Headingley campus. Meanwhile 35 girls from the women’s club aim to climb the highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) in under 24 hours on Saturday 28 May.
Speaking ahead of the challenge, Megan Walklin, Captain of the Women’s Club, said: “Our girls’ hockey team are really excited about our charity fundraiser this year and, with the challenge only a couple of weeks away, our training is already underway.
“It is the second year our club has chosen to fundraise for Marie Curie UK because of the great work the charity does – it is also close to the hearts of some of our team which is motivation for us to raise as much money as possible. If that wasn’t incentive enough, the boys’ team completed the same challenge two years ago in 22 hours and 55 minutes – we are determined to beat them!”
Last year the men’s team cycled from Leeds to Paris and raised over £4,000 for the same charity. This year, as they aim to raise at least £6,000, Matthew Dobson, Men’s Club Captain, commented: “After lots of success on the field this season, we aim to be even more successful off it and do as much as we can for charity.
“We are raising money for Marie Curie as they do fantastic work to help those with terminal illness. Many of the members taking part in the run have someone close to them who has, or has had, cancer, so it means a lot to us to raise as much money as possible and do our bit to help. Marie Curie is also the BUCS charity of the year so by raising money for them we are helping the University in the BUCS charity fundraising table.
“We would be very grateful for any donations - our fundraising page can be found at http://bit.ly/1ZF8l9p.”
