Leeds Beckett shortlisted for careers award
The nomination is recognition for our Creative & Digital Careers week - a collaboration between our Employability & Progression team and the Faculty of Arts, Environment & Technology, which supported students exploring careers within the Creative & Digital industries and freelancing.
The week included initiatives including ‘speed networking’, where students were able to connect with a wide range of employers from the sector and receive feedback on their CV or portfolio of work. As a direct result of this event, a number of students have been offered longer term mentoring by employers and several have secured work experience or placements.
Debbie Adams, Head of Employer Engagement at our University, said: “We’re delighted to have been shortlisted for this award particularly for one of our latest and most successful employability initiatives. Employability is a prime focus for us here at Leeds Beckett University and we are constantly striving to develop new and innovative ways to connect our students with employers. The employer ‘speed networking’ at the Creative & Digital Carers week was a great example of this.”
Paul Key, Design Manager at Perform Group, who attended the employer event, said: “It’s always a pleasure to come and speak to your students and help in any way I can. The reason I started doing this (mentoring students) was to bring to a creative department exactly the same access to industry professionals I was able to have during my degree course.”
The news comes following new employability stats which showed Leeds Beckett University is now fourth in the UK for employability, with 97% of UK graduates being in work or further study six months after graduating, according to the independent Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey.
The Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) is the professional body for careers and employability professionals working with higher education students and graduates and prospective entrants to higher education and the winners of all the awards will be announced on 7 September at the AGCAS Annual Conference for HE Careers and Employability professionals 2016 in Chester.
