Olympic round-up: How Leeds Beckett athletes performed in Rio
Sam Quek during her Leeds Beckett days
There were a number of Leeds Beckett athletes taking part.
Here's how they got on:
Alistair Brownlee, Triathlon, Team GB
Successfully defended the Triathlon crown he won at London 2012. Becomes the first ever two-time Olympic Triathlon champion.
Sam Quek, Women’s Hockey, Team GB
Important member of squad that won historic gold medal with 2-0 penalty shoot-out win over the Netherlands after a 3-3 draw. It was a first ever gold medal in Women’s Hockey and denied their opponents a third straight Olympic title.
Tom Bosworth, 20km Race Walk, Team GB
Outperformed expectations to finish sixth. His time of 80:13 took 28 seconds off his own national record and represented the best British Race Walking performance since the 1972 games.
Yona Knight-Wisdom, 3m Springboard Diving, Jamaica
The first male diver to represent Jamaica, performed strongly in the preliminary round to reach the semi-final where his 14th place wasn’t quite enough to reach the final. He missed out by just eight points on his overall score.
Brendan Boyce, 50km Race Walk, Ireland
Finished in 19th, improving on his 29th place in London four years ago in a time of 3:53.59.
Alex Wright, 20km and 50km Race Walk, Ireland
Finished 46th in the 20km Race Walk but had to pull out midway through the 50km race.
Quentin Rew, 50km Race Walk, New Zealand
Finished in 12th, improving on his 27th place in London four years ago. Came close to beating his personal best of 3:48.48 for the distance, clocking 3:49.32.
Sarah Barrow, 10m Platform Diving, Team GB
Unfortunately didn’t progress beyond the preliminary round, finishing 23rd but did well just to reach the games after battling Osteoid Osteoma – a non-cancerous tumour – and chronic shin problems.
Laura Weightman, 1,500m, Team GB
Reached a second successive Olympic final where she finished 11th in a time of 4:14.95. Got to the final with a gutsy performance in the semi-final to get one of the fastest loser spots.
Alastair Brogdon, Men’s Hockey, Team GB
Was part of the squad that missed out on the quarter-finals after finishing fifth in Group A following defeats to Belgium and Australia.
Emily Scarratt, Rugby Sevens, Team GB
Captained team to fourth in sport’s inaugural Olympic appearance after defeats to New-Zealand in the semi-final and Canada in the bronze medal match.
Lauren Smith, Badminton doubles, Team GB
Exited Group C after finishing third alongside partner Heather Olver following defeats to rivals Indonesia and Malaysia but a win over Hong Kong.
Kirsty Mackay, Women’s Hockey, Team GB
Supported the history-making Team GB hockey players as one of three reserve members of the squad.
Qais Ashfaq, Boxing, Team GB
Defeated 0-3 at the preliminary stage of the bantamweight competition by Thai opponent Chatchai Butdee.
Jo Watmore, Rugby Sevens, Team GB
Part of the same squad as Scarratt that finished fourth
