Chairs of Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership & Yorkshire Bank among Leeds Beckett guest speakers
Sponsored by Yorkshire Bank, the lectures are free and open to the public, and will run from October to May.
The strategic economic plan for Leeds city region will be up for discussion when the first lecture gets underway from 6-7pm on Tuesday 11 October in the University’s city campus Rose Bowl building. The session, entitled ‘Good growth, good lives, good sense’ will be presented by Roger Marsh, Chairman of the LEP. Since becoming Chair he has led the LEP through a period of significant transformation, securing the country’s largest local growth deal settlement - bringing in excess of £1bn of investment to the region. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list in 2015 for Services to Business and the Economy.
Roger will talk around the Northern Powerhouse - the recently refreshed strategic economic plan for the Leeds city region. This includes likely impacts from Brexit and how the region can deal with this challenge.
On Tuesday 8 November, Russell Craig, the Senior Director of Media and Community Relations at Asda will talk PR heaven and hell, and how public relations fits within an organisation in terms of understanding and communicating with the customer base. He will draw on his experience with Asda and also Manchester Airports Group.
On Tuesday 7 March, Richard Gregory the Chair of Yorkshire Bank will be looking at the operation of the board and how the decisions, behaviours and attitudes affect the very heart of an organisation. Richard has been Yorkshire Bank chair since 2004, and was appointed chair of the Risk Committee and senior independent director of what is now known as CYBG PLC (the company owning Yorkshire and Clydesdale Banks) in the same year.
Paul Houghton of Leeds Business School, who organises the annual lecture series, commented: “We have a diverse, engaging and relevant set of speakers for our 2016/2017 lecture cohort, and I look forward to hear them present and to welcoming them to our city campus. While our guest lectures are always for the benefit of our students and staff, they are also open to the public and we encourage the city’s business community and anyone else interested to register for what promise to be insightful and interesting lectures. In addition to the lectures, each session always concludes with a Q&A, where the audience get to ask the speaker questions.”

Your Future. #YorkshireMatters’ with Partner at PWC, Karen Finlayson, on Tuesday 25 October; ‘Creating shareholder value in the real world: looking beyond the profit numbers’ with Partner at Sentio Partners, Ian Marwood, on Tuesday 22 November; ‘Fraud and corruption in the world of business’ with Deloitte LLP Forensic Accountancy Partner, Chris Clements on Tuesday 6 December; ‘Economic prospects’ with Deputy Agent of the Bank of England, Will Holman on Tuesday 17 January; ‘The effective non-executive director’ with Terry Hodgkinson CBE on Tuesday 7 February; ‘Financial services: big pay and shady deals or an essential profession?’ with Chairwoman of the Office of Tax Simplification, Angela Knight on Tuesday 27 February and ‘Strategic communication & leadership in a global context’ with the Executive Vice-President of Global Corporate Affairs of the Intercontinental Hotels Group, Yasmin Diamond on Tuesday 21 March.
