Masterclasses to inspire future talent
The ARIAS, run by the Radio Academy, are supported by Leeds Beckett University and LeedsBID (Leeds Business Improvement District) and the Kaiser Chiefs – of which Ricky Wilson and Andrew White are Leeds Beckett graduates – will be headlining at the event, alongside Grammy-award winning artist, Gregory Porter, and 80s icon Rick Astley.
Ahead of the event, the university are holding a series of hands-on masterclasses to inspire year 12 pupils from the region who are interested in careers in the radio or audio industry, or related industries such as journalism. Masterclasses include: music production, digital journalism, contemporary performance on the radio, broadcast media technologies and music brands.
Tim Blackwell, senior lecturer in the university’s School of Computing, Creative Technologies & Engineering, is running the masterclass on broadcast media technologies. He said: “It’s great to be involved in supporting the ARIAS and even better to be helping to inspire young people from schools in the region and get them excited about the subjects we are passionate about! Telling them about all of the opportunities open to them for their careers is one thing, but being able to give them a brief to go out and produce a video will hopefully give them a real introduction to broadcast media and their future career options.”
In addition to running the masterclasses for local schools, Leeds Beckett’s support of the ARIAS means 35 current university students will get unprecedented, hands-on experience working at the event and helping to stage and promote a national awards ceremony.
