Matty Bovan hosting interactive ‘Boomerang’ event at Yorkshire Sculpture Park
The Boomerang exhibition aims to question identity and who controls it in the age of social media, where over 95 million images are posted on Instagram every day.
Visitors to Yorkshire Sculpture Park have the chance to enter an immersive environment and to choose from a variety of sculptural fashion designs created by Bovan and consider their personal image in a mirror, behind which an unseen photographer captures their images.
Participants are encouraged to engage with this wearable artwork for a minimum of 10 minutes, much longer than the average concentration span of three seconds for an artwork or image. In doing so, Bovan, and visitors, can question the construction of identity, authorship, while creating a new self-image that is captured in a unique way, obscuring sculpture, fashion and photography.
Visitors will not be allowed to take their own photos and will be required to hand over any digital devices – the project will be documented with a set of images that will only be used in print publications and never shared online.
Matty, who is a member of our Leeds School of Arts, won both the International Woolmark Prize and the Karl Lagerfeld Award for Innovation in fashion earlier this year, becoming only the second designer to win both awards in the same year. Bovan also participated in London Fashion Week online this September, presenting his Spring/Summer 2022 collection by short film.
Matty is a Senior Lecturer at Leeds School of Arts at Leeds Beckett University. Read more about his work with the university.
