Obesity experts to speak at Leeds Beckett
This is the final event of the Economic and Social Research Council Obesity Network’s ‘Opportunities and Challenges’ which began in 2016. It will feature a number of lectures from prestigious guests including Professor Alex Singleton and Dr Mark Green of Liverpool University, Professor Mark Gilthorpe, Dr Amy Downing and Ariadni Aravani of the University of Leeds. Guests will take part in a panel before a networking lunch.
Dr Claire Griffiths, a senior lecturer at Carnegie School of Sport and organiser of the event, said: “It’s about taking new and non-traditional data to align to public health research priorities, whilst acknowledging and understanding the challenges and opportunities associated with these data.”
The event, which takes place in the Great Hall, at Leeds Beckett’s Headingley Campus on Tuesday 25 April is open to all. You can register for the free event at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/obesity-network-seminar-opportunities-and-challenges-tickets-31930946320
In 2015 Leeds Beckett launched a programme to investigate how to better support local authorities to tackle the country’s growing obesity epidemic
The project, commissioned by Public Health England, the Local Government Association and the Association of Directors of Public Health, is identifying ways in which local authorities can create a whole systems approach in tackling obesity.
The three-year programme, funded by Public Health England, aims to enable local authorities to make a major step change in their ability to tackle obesity through a more coordinated approach. Previous research has suggested that only by taking a whole systems approach – linking a whole range of sectors and influences including planning, housing, transport, children’s and adult’s services, business and health - can local authorities make significant inroads into tackling obesity and improve quality of life, save money and create sustained prosperity for local areas.
