change the culture

To build a positive, inclusive and nurturing university community, we must all make a personal and positive commitment to upholding the values that underpin that.

You can play your part to help to change the culture by taking the pledge, joining us with the range of training and activities available throughout the academic year, and reporting incidents of unacceptable behaviour.

Sexual Violence Prevention workshop

Become an Active Bystander

Colleagues and students can join the growing number of 'active bystanders' in the university by joining the 2 hour Sexual Violence Prevention workshop to gain the knowledge and skills to safely and positively intervene in situations involving sexual harassment and violence. For more information email studentsupportreport@leedsbeckett.ac.uk.

Students may also apply to train as a student facilitator, assisting with delivery of Bystander training across our campuses.

Ask for Angela

Ask for Angela is a campaign to help reduce vulnerability, support those in an uncomfortable situation or potential danger. Across the university, students can safely ask for support from staff by using a discreet codeword ‘Ask for Angela’.

Look out for 'ask for Angela' poster around the university. In any location the posters are present, staff will be trained to respond to ‘Angela’ and will support you.

The member of staff you speak with will be trained on how to discreetly ensure your safety in the situation. The staff member will take you to a safe location away from the busy social space. The staff member will listen to you and depending on the support you would need; they will facilitate the most appropriate action. This can include collecting your belongings on your behalf or keeping an eye on the situation to avoid escalation. They can support you by calling a taxi, friend or family member for you. They might also request support from campus security if necessary.

If you have experienced sexual violence or harassment, they will refer you to the Zero Tolerance Support Network. Information about support they provide can be found on our Get support page.

The "Ask Angela" campaign is named in remembrance of Angela Crompton, a woman who was abused and killed by her husband in 2012 when an argument about redecorating his house got out of control.

The program was started in Lincolnshire, by Haley Child, the Substance Misuse Strategy Coordinator for Lincolnshire County Council. It has now been adopted by venues all over the country.

You can support this initiative in a number of ways:

  • You can spread the word about the campaign and the fact that any student can use this discreet code word around the university to ask for help
  • The university will also be looking for Ask for Angela Ambassadors in the near future, to support the team in raising awareness and knowledge of the campaign. If you would like to express an interest in the position please contact zerotolerance@leedsbeckett.ac.uk.
