ANTI-RACIST TEACHER EDUCATION NETWORK (ARTEN)

class of teachers

The Anti-Racist Teacher Education Network (ARTEN) is a long-established network which started in the 1980s to improve the content and teaching of anti-racist education in pre-service teacher education in the 1990s though to the 2000s. However, as initial teacher education (ITE) policy changed and members of ARTEN retired the ground-breaking work of the network seemed to disappear off the ITE radar.

The introduction of the Anti-racism Framework for ITE written by Professors Heather Smith and Vini Lander in September 2022 and the conference based on the Framework as re-ignited the interest and debate about anti-racism in ITE. The conference in March 2023 organised by the Centre for Race, education and Decoloniality at Leeds Beckett University drew in many teacher educators from across the country. Many teacher educators had attended conference related to ITE and others who attended conferences focussed on anti-racism but no-one in the room had, in recent years, attended a conference on anti-racism in ITE, mainly because there hadn’t been any such conferences for at least two decades.

After the conference Professor Vini Lander approached Jane Lane a former member and leader of ARTEN, who co-ordinates the remaining members to meet for tea and a chat, to seek permission to resurrect ARTEN. Jane and the other members of ARTEN graciously agreed. It is on the shoulders of giants such as Jane Lane, Ian Menter, Ros George, the late Chris Gaine and many others that we build the next iteration of ARTEN. The current members of ARTEN have kindly passed the title and baton to a new group of teacher educators to advance anti-racism in ITE.

The Network

The new ARTEN was launched on Tuesday 30th January.

The network is based at the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality at Leeds Beckett University. The new network for teacher educators committed to anti-racism would build on the anti-racist schools' award which has been developed at the Centre, the Leeds City Council and Liverpool City Council anti-racist schools' networks. If you would like to join our network, register here.

The new ARTEN is largely a virtual/online community which develops anti-racist practice in ITE/T. There will be four meetings per academic year.

The network consists of teacher educators committed to anti-racism and racially just teacher education. It includes teacher educators in higher education, school mentors as well as ITE/T tutors in SCITTs who are willing to share and develop their anti-racist practice.

The Network has a page on the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality website, and we will look to develop videos and other resources. which ITE/T tutors can download in order to develop their AR pedagogy and practice. ARTEN will showcase good anti-racist practice in ITE and develop a collegial approach to advancing anti-racism in ITE/T. In time, it may develop regional groups which could provide in-person support to colleagues wanting to develop antiracism in ITE/T related to the Anti-racism Framework for ITE/T.

The network will provide a supportive environment to enable the collaborative development of good ITE/T anti-racist practice, support the recruitment and development of teacher educators who will embed anti-racism in their work with pre-service teachers and the network will seek to research anti-racism transformations in ITE/T.

The inaugural steering group meeting took place on the 5th March 2024. We are pleased to be able to confirm that the Steering Group members are as follows:

  • Faith Mcferran, City of Liverpool College
  • Gwen Morgan, Open University in Wales
  • Dr Naziya O’Reilly, Leeds Trinity University

Anti-Racism Framework

This framework was developed through a research project commissioned by the National Education Union (NEU) and supported by internal funding from Newcastle University. The project was led by Professor Heather J Smith (PI, Newcastle University) and Professor Vini Lander (Co-I, Leeds Beckett University) with research support provided by Marsha Garratt. The research project undertook a global literature review into anti-racism in teacher education which informed the development of a survey open to all initial teacher education providers in England. The survey was shared via UCET (Universities Council for the Education of Teachers) and NASBTT (National Association of School Based Teacher Trainers) to capture all University and school centred providers. We worked with partners (Centre of Race Education and Decoloniality; Show Racism the Red Card; Universities of Sanctuary; BAME Ed Network; NEU; NALDIC) as consultors, co-producers and disseminators. The framework was devised in light of the findings of the global literature review, the survey analysis and interviews with teacher educators.
