Expert, effective and ethical coaching

Responding to growing concerns about the balance between the demands of high-performance sport and athlete and coach welfare.

Expert, effective and ethical coaching

the challenge

Since the London and Rio Olympic cycles there have been growing concerns about the balance between the demands of high-performance sport and athlete and coach welfare.

Centre staff have been commissioned by UK Sport to effective and ethical coaching in high performance sports and centres where there was a positive track record of both performance and individual welfare.

The approach

We have undertaken a range of studies in this area using a ‘depth approach’, that is, spending extended periods with athletes, coaches, practitioners, and leaders in a high performance and performance context.

The impact

The results have been used by UK Sport to inform the development of high-performance coaches.
