American Football

Overview

Leeds Beckett University American football was founded in 2009 and has had a winning record in each season of its existence. With a new coaching staff for the 2016/2017 season, the team developed its performance-based culture and won the Division One National Championship; the squad will compete in the BUCS Northern Premiership in the 2017/2018 season which contains the best five University programmes in the UK.

The programme has 8 coaches and two support staff whom work tirelessly to ensure the student athletes have an excellent sporting experience. Rehab, strength and conditioning and film review sessions form a large part of the training programme along with the high-tempo on-field sessions.

Other than the season (November-March), notable events throughout the team calendar include a weekend training camp held away from the University campus (October), the annual Varsity game contested against the University of Leeds (April) and the team awards (May).

Plus Icon Partnerships and pathways

The Leeds Beckett University American football programme is comprehensive, with opportunities available for student athletes to coach the younger teams and work within local schools. Many students have developed their coaching skills through this along with attending courses delivered on campus and in the local region.

The team has developed strong links with coaches in the USA and Europe and there are opportunities for athletes to use these to further their American football playing experiences.

We understand that to breed success players must be treated as individuals and their programmes will incorporate; coaching, strength & conditioning sessions, analysis, and physiotherapy. The programme’s motto is: ‘The Relentless Pursuit of Excellence’ – we expect every student-athlete to join us fully in this endeavour.

The mixed non-contact version of the sport is proving to be very popular at the University and is a great alternative to full contact football.

  • Leeds Academy of American Football:

There are opportunities for students to be involved in coaching junior players aged from 4-18 years of age. This takes place on campus and in the community.
