Leeds Varsity

Leeds Varsity is the biggest student sporting event of the year in the City and one of the biggest university Varsities in the country.

Every year in early October the main sees the two biggest universities in the city go head to head in over 50 fixtures. More than 1400 students from Leeds Beckett University and the University of Leeds take part in the ultimate pre-season fixture across 25 sports culminating in a Rugby Union match under the Headingley Carnegie Stadium floodlights.

The Rugby finale is always a great end to a day of sporting excellence. In 2015 over 14,000 students, staff and alumni filled out Headingley Carnegie Stadium, the home of Leeds Rugby, to cheer on their university. Fixture and ticket information for October 2016 will be released towards the end of summer.

Spring Success for Beckett's Varsity Teams

At the end of the academic year a number of teams take part in showcase Varsity events which include American Football, T20 Cricket and Rugby League. In 2016 teams from Leeds Beckett were triumphant in all events. 

The American Football team beat Leeds Uni Celtics 41-26 in a tense game at Weetwood Sports Park. A few weeks later the men's and women's T20 cricket sides bowled out their city rivals in the annual Tommy Hardman memorial match. Finally on 12th May Leeds Beckett Rugby League 1st team notched up a convincing 38-6 demolition against a promising Uni side at Headingley Carnegie Stadium. The game was curtain-raiser for another hotly contest local derby, Leeds Rhinos v Castleford Tigers in the First Utility Super League competition.
