Senior Lecturer

Clare works as a Lecturer in Psychological Therapies and Mental Health. She is a practising Integrative Relational Counsellor & Psychotherapist (BACP Registered) and is also a registered Occupational Therapist (OT). Clare has worked in a range of clinical settings including in-patient, out-patient and community NHS settings, private practice, and the voluntary sector. She has also delivered training across these sectors in employed roles and as an independent trainer since 2004.

Clare worked and volunteered in health and care settings since 1998. As an OT Clare worked in a range of NHS settings, specialising in older peoples' mental health and dementia as a senior clinician, supervisor, and clinical lead. Clare has worked with a range of third sector organisations including Rape Crisis charities, local and national bereavement charities and Alzheimer’s Society, Cruse Bereavement Care & Rape Crisis charities. She has additional experience working with adult clients following bereavement and loss and clients who have experienced relational trauma, including abuse and neglect in childhood.

As a psychotherapist, Clare's core philosophy is humanistic and drawing on additional approaches to tailor the therapy to the individual client. These approaches include: Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, Systemic, Transactional Analysis (TA), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Trauma Informed, Multiplicity/parts work. Clare also enjoys working creatively and experientially.

Clare is passionate about inclusion, social justice and improving accessibility to talking therapies. This includes making therapy accessible to older adults, people living with cognitive differences such as dementia and people with learning disabilities.

Research Interests

  • Clare is currently undertaking a PhD exploring the life narratives of older adults who were sexually abused as children, who have accessed psychological therapies
  • Improving accessibility in psychological therapies, including with the following client groups:
    • older adults
    • clients with cognitive disabilities / differences such as dementia/learning disabilities
