Created in collaboration with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), this course lasts four years, and blends academic learning with practical training. We offer flexible modules that work around the skills your industry requires, including:

  • Understanding markets and customers
  • Managerial decision making
  • Business strategy
  • Performance Management
  • Leading innovation and change

Apprentices will be able to apply the theory they learn at University in practice within their own organisations, through assessed projects and tailored learning.

Apprentices will be in full-time employment whilst studying towards this degree. Modules will be delivered in blocks and through work based learning and two way knowledge transfer between industry and academia. This degree enables apprentices to develop into confident and capable leadership and management professionals.

What modules can I study?

Core modules

The module will examine the understanding and utilisation of different financial information for managers. It will also consider how shareholders can use financial statements as a means of evaluating the firm’s performance.

This module is about the people side of business and structured into four main themes: motivation; management; leadership; and teams. These themes are explored within the context of culture, political environment, global working, ethics & responsibility, inclusivity, diversity and wellbeing.  In this module, apprentices actively engage in activities to develop an understanding of the challenges for them as potential leaders and managers in terms of developing others.

This module will provide apprentices with essential tools and theories to identify the economic dimensions of the human condition in a business environment. The module will promote an understanding of the operation of key global markets and consider important worldwide macro-economic issues.

This marketing module will help apprentices become familiar with the key marketing principles and appreciate how contemporary marketing concepts are applied by organisations. Apprentices will gain an insight into the challenges of applying marketing and the consequences for an organisation that fails to become customer orientated.

This module introduces the retail industry and the economic environment in which it operates. Study of this module will help apprentices to understand consumer behaviour, the retail industry and the contemporary environment – locally, regionally and globally. It will look at real world issues in economics and retail, together with the dynamic changes that are in constant motion.

This module gives apprentices the opportunity to undertake a piece of investigative research for an organisation (potentially their employer). The brief involves identifying data and information needed to analyse the business issue and prepare a consultancy report appropriate for a business audience. The topic of investigation may be defined through discussion with a company and/or be a topic covered in the content of one of the modules.

Core modules

This module aims to develop an applied understanding of the behavioural, psychological and management science approaches to managerial decision making within organisations. These are considered in terms of application of theoretical knowledge to the apprentice’s own organisation.

In this module, apprentices gain insight into the technical and behavioural aspects of implementing effective performance management and measurement systems. They achieve this by establishing and running a business through a business simulation software.

This module aims to set retailing activities in a marketing context from both a European and global perspective and provide a coherent framework for the recognition of key retail marketing strategic issues. It will also provide a framework for apprentices to understand the organisational and operational issues related to successful retail marketing activity.

This module offers apprentices the opportunity to critically evaluate the formulation and implementation of processes of learning and talent development strategies, policies, and methods for achieving future organisational effectiveness with reference to relevant contextual factors. Apprentices will be able to analyse relationships with key internal/external partners and stakeholders to diagnose and manage learning and talent development through the initiation, development, and implementation of learning strategies, whilst considering and evaluating the role of equality of opportunity and diversity in learning and talent development.

This module provides apprentices the opportunity to work on a performance improvement issue in their organisation. The specific issue that is identified for investigation will follow from discussions between the apprentice, their in-company mentor, and their university tutor (supervisor). The core aim of the module is to develop the consulting, investigative research and project management knowledge, skills and behaviours of the apprentice in line with the Apprenticeship Standard.

Core modules

Business Strategy provides a critical understanding of the whole organisation. It enables apprentices to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to critically comment on, and contribute to, the strategies of any organisation. Apprentices work with complex, substantial and real-life business problems, honing skills in critical analysis and creative problem-solving that helps to develop genuinely useful skills to enable them to compete for jobs more effectively.

This module aims to develop an applied understanding of the risk management process and its value to an organisation. It will also provide a framework for the practical application of risk management within an operational and business environment and will help to develop practical and academic competency in risk management tools and techniques.

This module provides apprentices the opportunity to work on a change project in their organisation. The theme area for the project is organisational change and innovation.  This may involve working on a project in the apprentice’s department/function but may also involve working on a wider organisational project that may already be ‘live’ in the organisation. The topic/theme of the project will follow from discussions between the apprentice, their in-company mentor, and their university tutor (supervisor). This is the capstone work-based project module for the apprenticeship, with the aim of developing the consulting, investigative research and project management skills of the apprentice.

Optional modules

Students will choose one of the following two modules:

This module explores the importance of ethical business decision making, how the governance of firms is organised and the consideration of stakeholders in developing approaches to the social responsibility of businesses. Ethics and business success, in terms of survival and profitability, have been proven to go hand in hand in many research studies. Through a case-based approach apprentices will build upon their knowledge of business operations established in their previous studies to gain a critical insight into building an ethical and sustainable business.

This module is specifically designed to give insights into the crucially important area of digital marketing. The digital, and digital marketing, environment has a dramatic impact on business in the 21st century. Hence future marketing managers will need to appreciate a variety of concepts, models and theories concerned with digital marketing such as developing web paradigms, big data and dynamic tools, platforms and devices, e.g. social, mobile, wearable, SEM, analytics.
