From India to Leeds - My international student journey in Sports Events Management

Hi, I’m Pranavi, and I’m an international student from India. I’m currently studying MSc Sports Events Management. I’ve had a strong interest in working in sport for as long as I can remember, and I’ve been organising sports events since I was 15. What started as something I genuinely enjoyed slowly became a clear career goal. When I discovered this course at Leeds Beckett, I didn’t hesitate in applying - it felt like the right decision.

Graduation

Why did you decide to study abroad?

Choosing to study abroad wasn’t just about earning a degree, for me it was about growth. Back home in India, I was always ambitious but I felt ready for more exposure, more independence, and more real-world experience. I wanted to step into a completely new environment; different culture, different education system, different expectations and see how I would adapt.

It wasn’t just about academics; it was about challenging myself. Even if that meant being uncomfortable at times, even if it meant being scared. I wanted to push beyond what felt familiar and grow into the person I knew I could become.

What attracted you to Leeds Beckett?

What truly drew me to this university was the genuine sense of connection I felt even before arriving. Throughout the application process, the support and guidance from the admissions team stood out. They were approachable, responsive, and reassuring at every stage, which made a big difference when making such an important decision.

I never felt like just another application in a system. Instead, I felt acknowledged and supported as an individual with clear goals and ambitions. That early experience gave me confidence that I was choosing a place where I would be valued, not just academically, but personally as well.

Has the course met your expectations so far?

Yes, and in ways I didn’t expect!

Through assignments, group projects, and real-world case studies, I’ve developed greater confidence in my abilities and learned how to take on leadership roles with clarity and responsibility.

It has consistently pushed me beyond my comfort zone, challenging me to think critically, communicate effectively, and trust my own ideas. Over time, I’ve not only improved academically but also started to truly believe in my personal and professional potential. The course has given me a clear sense of direction and the confidence to pursue it. I’m no longer simply a student focused on passing exams; I’ve become someone ready to step into the professional world with purpose, self-belief, and determination.

What does a typical study week look like for you?

A typical study week for me is a carefully balanced mix of commitment to studying, self-discipline, and continuous learning. My days usually start with scheduled lectures and seminars, where I actively participate, take detailed notes, and engage in discussions. Beyond the classroom, I put alot of time in to independent research, assignments, and group projects, often collaborating with peers to share ideas and deepen our understanding of the subject.

Alongside my studies, I also prioritise personal growth by attending workshops, networking events, and industry-related sessions whenever I can.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

What I love most about my course is how closely it connects to the real world! Every lecture, project, and discussion feels meaningful because I can see how it directly shapes my future career.

What has been equally valuable are the people I’ve met along the way. My classmates have become a true support system; we motivate each other, learn together, and celebrate every achievement, big or small.

What do you love most about living in Leeds?

Being away from home has taught me to stand on my own, make decisions for myself, and truly understand who I am. This city has witnessed both my toughest challenges and my proudest moments, shaping me in ways I never expected.

I also deeply appreciate the diversity and warmth of the people around me. I’ve met individuals from all walks of life who have become like family. Living here has given me unforgettable memories, lasting friendships, and valuable life lessons that I will carry with me forever.

What are your favourite places to eat, relax, or explore?

I absolutely love spending time in the city’s coffee shops and bookstores - they’re the perfect places to meet interesting and like-minded people.

How did you make friends when your first arrived?

When I first arrived, everything felt very new and a little overwhelming, so I made a conscious effort to step out of my comfort zone. I introduced myself in classes, joined student activities, and attended university events. I also reached out to classmates and people in my accommodation, which helped ease the initial awkwardness.

Over time, those small interactions grew into friendships. Being open, approachable, and willing to embrace new experiences made all the difference. Those first connections soon became my support system away from home.

Have you met people from different cultures?

Yes, absolutely. One of the most rewarding parts of my journey here has been meeting people from so many different cultures. Every conversation, friendship, and shared experience has taught me something new about the world and about myself. Being surrounded by such diversity has made me more open-minded, adaptable, and empathetic.

What support services have been most helpful?

The student mental health team, along with my course team, have truly been my backbone. I’ve been navigating mental health challenges for a long time, and both teams have been there for me consistently offering support whenever I needed it. In fact, they went above and beyond to ensure I felt comfortable during my graduation ceremony. I’ll never forget my course director cheering the loudest as I crossed the stage, it’s moments like these that made me feel valued, and supported throughout my journey.

What has been your favourite moment?

Every moment has been unforgettable! This journey has been a rollercoaster, but each experience has been incredibly meaningful to me. I wish I could have spent even more time with my lecturers and course team, they became my small but cherished family in Leeds and I truly miss them.

Do you have any tips around settling in quickly and feeling at home?

Make as many friends as you can and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The more you explore and connect with people, the sooner you’ll start to feel at home. I often tell my family and friends that Leeds Beckett and the UK have become my second home, and I would return here in a heartbeat.

Would you recommend Leeds Beckett and living in Leeds to other international students looking to study here?

Absolutely! Everything the university has done to support me as an international student has been truly exceptional, I don’t think any other university could have matched it. I’ve cried, I’ve laughed wholeheartedly, and I’ve cherished every single experience here. Most importantly, I’ve grown into the confident, resilient person I am today, and that growth is something I will always carry with me.
