Why did you choose Leeds Beckett University?

I had been in full-time employment for several years, with little job satisfaction and no opportunities for career progression. I was interested in quantity surveying and chose to study it at Leeds Beckett University because it will give me the skills to become a surveyor once I finish. The course is also accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, which appealed to me.

Why did you apply for the Andrew Platten Scholarship?

Going from full-time employment to being a student has taken a lot of adjustment. I am just able to get by after the costs of commuting and paying bills, which is quite stressful. Add to that the cost of buying the right equipment and study materials, it can be a real challenge.

Thanks to this scholarship, I believe that I will achieve my ambition of working in the industry. The scholarship has given me the space to focus on my education, while keeping on top of the extra costs that come with going to university.

I am sure Andrew Platten would have been passionate about all students at Leeds Beckett achieving their goals, and I feel proud to have been chosen for this scholarship.

What does the future hold for you now?

My goal is to be working in the industry once I graduate. My learning at Leeds Beckett is preparing me for this. I am enjoying expanding my knowledge in the more complex areas of study, building on what I have already learned.

I am looking forward to the interdisciplinary project, working alongside other students. The experience will prepare me for working in the industry when I finish the course.
