Gain the skills required in design, law, management and technology to become a chartered surveyor on this Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accredited degree.
As part of your course, you’ll:
- Study the design and construction of new buildings as well as the repair, refurbishment and management of existing structures
- Consider the historic elements of the built environment and discover how different aspects work together
- Learn how to maintain and enhance buildings that are important to our heritage
- Gain hands-on experience during site visits to modern developments and historic projects
- Develop your collaborative working skills

We have strong relationships with companies in the region and you’ll be taught by building surveyors. Visiting planners, architects, researchers and civil and structural engineers will deliver guest lectures and share up-to-date experience of their work in the field.
Creating industry connections
If you’re studying full-time, you’ll have the opportunity to undertake a placement year in industry to gain invaluable work experience. You’ll also be encouraged to become a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
As a graduate, you’ll be eligible for full membership of the RICS following a period of approved professional practice. You’ll also need to complete a successful final assessment of professional competence by the RICS.

Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. What you'll learn
Discover the importance of recording, presenting, and manipulating data in a formal, standardised manner, as used and understood by all professionals in the construction industry.
An introduction to the construction methods, techniques and technical detailing involved in the construction of small-scale domestic buildings. You will also develop the ability to understand and interpret construction drawings.
An introduction to law in relation to the built environment covering the torts and contract law in its simplest form. You will gain an understanding of the legal concepts associated with construction practices as well as those in the professional areas.
Examine the construction types that have been present throughout recent history and gain an understanding of the issues that these can hold for the building surveyor.
An introduction to building physics and the building services systems found within dwellings, with a particular emphasis on low carbon buildings.
Explore the concept of building design and how this is considered in cost management during the design process.
What you'll learn
This is one of the main areas associated building surveying. It is described as the systematic treatment of building defects, their causes, their consequences and remedies.
Discover the concepts, philosophies, technologies and software applications supporting the processes and mechanisms employed in digital and collaborative working systems within the construction, built environment and allied industries.
Gain an understanding of the principles, techniques and processes involved in the design and construction of buildings (high-rise buildings and structures), especially at large, commercial and advanced scales. You will examine the behaviour of structural and non-structural elements and how they are assembled to comply with statutory and functional requirements.
Focus on the broad range of professional services undertaken by building surveyors, paying particular attention to the practical application of knowledge, particularly in the legal fields. You will understand professional ethics and their importance to professional practice applications.
Develop an understanding of the many different forms of construction contract that are in use around the world and the industry currently. You will address the main areas of cost, quality and time within a project and how these are dealt with under the terms of the contracts.
Experience a project-based environment that represents working practices common to professional practice. You will gain practical experience of performing in your own professional role within a team, and you will develop an understanding of your role within the process of team development.
Designed for part-time students who are employed in a related field, you will work individually collating and reflecting on evidence from your workplace. You will reflect on your experience and performance, identifying areas for improvement.
What you'll learn
Gain in-depth knowledge of economic and financial drivers of commercial management, control, and decision making within the organisation, and develop a critical awareness of the effects of the wider economy on the commercial decision making in construction organisations.
Develop an understanding of the broad range of skills required to ensure that buildings and services are managed and operated efficiently and effectively.
Working as part of a team, you will apply your knowledge, understanding and appreciation to a real-life construction project to analyse working designs, construction and managerial problems and develop logical, workable, cost-effective low-carbon solutions.
Gain an understanding of the principles, techniques and processes involved in the adaptation, refurbishment and retrofit of existing buildings, including the conservation of historic buildings. You will examine the principles, techniques and challenges involved in refurbishing existing buildings to meet statutory, energy, economic and functional requirements.
This is your opportunity to research in detail a problem close to your heart and produce a piece of written work that may be worthy of publication.
You will reflect on your performance in the workplace and will prepare and present a case study as an oral presentation and written submission.
This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total.
Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

With an understanding of buildings, law and management, the career of a building surveyor is extremely varied. Upon graduation, you could go on to work in private practice, for housing companies, with large commercial organisations specialising in conservation or lease legislation, or as an academic.
