Our Rock Skills Introduction course is ideal for beginner climbers; those who have never climbed on rock and those with limited experience of climbing indoors. No previous experience is necessary as the course is designed to teach you the basics.

Course information

This course is a one-day introduction to climbing outside on boulders and friendly crags. The purpose of this course is to teach you how to move on rock, find your balance, as well as how to use your feet correctly and we will also introduce ropework and belaying basics.

Rock Climbing is a fun activity that can benefit your health and wellbeing in many ways. CGO’s Rock skill course is specifically designed to provide a progressive learning experience for climbers who are new to climbing or are in the process of learning.

We provide a supportive and reassuring environment for beginners and our qualified and friendly instructors will guide you throughout the day.

This course will cover:

• Background and Planning. An awareness of the types of places you can climb in the UK and Ireland, how to use guidebooks and mobile devices to find crags and routes, crag etiquette and the work of the mountaineering councils.

• Climbing Skills. Fundamental movement skills and climbing styles.

• Footwear and Equipment. Footwear and equipment selection and how to use the kit you choose.

• Technical Skills. Tying into a harness, belaying, spotting and how to abseil.

• Environmental Knowledge. The impact of climbers at the crag, ethics, access and environmental considerations for climbers.

• Hazards and Emergency Procedures. Identifying hazards, managing risk, understanding common injuries, how to get help and the role of Mountain Rescue and associated emergency services.

The minimum age for this course is 12 years, making it ideal for secondary school pupils, college and University students, youth and community groups, and even corporate teams.

Duration
One day. We run this course as a full day session from 9am to 5pm.

Venue
We run this course at various locations in Yorkshire, the Peak District, the Lake District, Scotland and North Wales.
